  • Before: The need for a bathroom makeover (aesthetic only) was evident in this example: The large mirror had been glued to the wall and was discoloring from behind. Removing it would damage the wall; I needed a creative fix.
  • Notice the mirror is taped off, as are boxes/accessories to be finished in the same way.
  • I primed the mirror (and some glass accessories) with glass and tile primer. I then created a two-step decorative paint frame around mirror to update the look, hide the discoloration and tie the theme together.
  • I finished outside part of frame with Sherwin-Williams' Artisan "Tissue" decorative finish, with antique white color. Glaze will be added at the end, to entire frame.
  • I painted the inside of the frame in Sherwin-Williams' Artisan "Leaf" finish, in a green color. Notice that the outside part of frame was taped off first, using FrogTape yellow for delicate surfaces (after frame was completely dry)
  • Not much to tell, except that Frogtape green and yellow are what I recommend.
  • After: The photo's not great, but the frame is actually very nice. Perfect in-place solution. (Floor: I resurfaced the old existing tile with tinted concrete.) 2
  • After: Again, photo's not great, but it all turned out beautifully. 2

Old Bathroom Mirror Makeover: Decorative Paint Frame Without Mirror Removal

I enjoyed a recent post by Danielle Fraser and thought I'd share the solution I used, implemented in summer 2012 and didn't require mirror removal: ...»

Issue: Our entire bathroom needed an aesthetic upgrade. Sore spots included the large mirror that had been glued to the wall by the builder and had been discoloring for years from behind. Removing it would have created more work in wall repair. Instead I created a 2-step border, in the same decorative tissue and leaf paint finishes that I'd used elsewhere in the room, to frame around the old mirror, hide discoloration and tie the theme together throughout the room. When finished, I mimicked the process in accessories (boxes, glasses, etc.).

Ployblend Grout Renew - An affordable, easy way to update your grout color

We built our home in 1985. In 2000 DIY hubby laid ceramic tile directly over cheap vinyl flooring in our two baths, kitchen, dining room and laundry room. We went with a light tile, but ...»
for some reason I wanted the grout to be dark. My thinking was that it would hide stains on the grout and help each tile to "stand out". At the time it was a large improvement over the damaged sheet vinyl. Over time, however, the dark brown grout discolored or became "hazy" in places and it just always looked "dirty".

I first became aware of the ability to "paint" grout lines on that wonderful, informative, inspirational tool: Pinterest. After some research I located and purchased Polyblend's Grout Renew in Antique White (#10246) at Home Depot. See for yourself the transformation from "ugly, dirty" grout to a renewed, clean floors!

The Polyblend Grout Renew is a "colorant and sealer" all in one. Each grout line must be painted individually and dries very quickly. The instructions say to use a toothbrush, but I used a medium stiff small stencil brush (or two). My grout was sanded and it "ate" the brushes. You must take care to wipe the product off of any surface that you do not want colored before it dries. I did do a second coat on each of my grout lines for coverage. I painted a section, wiped off any excess, moved on to another section and then backed up to the previous section with a second coat, wiping off excess and then moved forward, until the job was completed. A very tedious process, but well worth it! I used a little over 1/2 bottle of grout renew on two baths. Cost per bottle is approximately $12.00!

These pictures were from a guest bathroom. I've already completed the master bath. The baths had 6x6 tile. Now I move on to the 12x12 tile in the kitchen, dining room and laundry room.

This extra info from the manufacturer answered my question and may answer others': ...»

Limitations: Not recommended for use underwater.

Do not use solvent-based cleaners on recolored grout joints. We recommend TileLab® Grout & Tile Cleaner or a Aqua Mix® Cleaner & Resealer.

Unglazed tile will require sealing prior to coloring to ensure Grout Renew isn't absorbed into the tile. We recommend TileLab® SurfaceGard® Sealer.

Do not apply when ambient temperature is below 50°F (10°C) or above 80°F (27°C).

Repurposing & Upcycling: Any creative uses for dishwasher racks?

I recently replaced my dishwasher and saved the upper rack and the bottom rolling rack. I figured there must be something creative that could be done with them to keep them out of the landfill. ANy Ideas?

years I've been considering going over my tile shower's existing tile with tinted concrete. If I do it, I'll develop a workshop around the project and share some info. here at HT for you :) My neighbor recently had a (fiberglass?) tub/shower resurfaced (glazed?) and she's thrilled with the low-cost, high-impact results. I'll be checking it out soon and pumping her for information, which I'll post at HT for you when I have it :)

  • took mirror off then checked out pinterest for ideas then realized it didnt have to come off :( 2
  • soooo removed the one 4 light fixture and put in 2 two bulbed light fixtures The advantage to removing the mirror was we could cut the drywall behind the mirror to make new holes for the new lights
  • Room primed and painted and the mirror was reattached
  • also painted our cabinets in a trim and door paint
  • middle cabinet in place new light fixtures connected and now onto the framing of the mirrors
  • bottom of cabinet dressed then realized I needed more height to cover the original light "hole" grrr 3
  • NOTE: the cabinet was not from the counter top up it was actually started at the "back splash" just because the "back splash" is beveled and it just made it easier to start with something flat and dress and trim the bottom
  • we also spray painted the knobs a brushed nickel 1
  • and spray painted the hugger lights with the brushed nickel

Large Bathroom Mirror redo to double framed mirrors and cabinet

Everyone hates the 6+ foot mirror that all main bathrooms seem to come with. Soooo we took an idea from a fellow pinterester and made it our own (so to speak). This is NOT a one day ...»
project but the results are worth the time :)

You will need

1"x4" MDF (32 ft)

1/2 birch plywd

Trim (40 ft)

Baseboard (3 ft)

All building supplies for the mirror/cabinet project approx. 40.00

Lights - 38.00 each on sale

New faux wood blind - 39.00

Paint - 5.00 (bought a mis tint from Rona)

1 can of brushed Nickel spray paint 10.00

we also did floating shelves in the water closet (another idea I got from a fellow Pinterester)

We only needed 2 shelves for this bathroom

but made 6 shelves

24X 8 inches with supports

1 sheet of 1/4 plywood, sanded on one side

10 1×2 pine boards

floating shelves supplies 20.00

when all was said and done the total reno for this bathroom was 190.00

Have fun with it and make it your own
