How to Create a Landscape from Scratch

I overhauled my entire landcape last year. Was I crazy to undertake so much at once? Yes!! But I am really enjoying my outdoor space this year. I received several questions about my ...»
landscape, so I put together a guide to share how I built my landscape from scratch.

  • The balletic blossom of Magnolia grandiflora "Little Gem."

Why you should plant Magnolia grandiflora "Little Gem"

Because the blossoms smell as good as this one looks. Plus, it's hardy from Long Island to South Florida. Plus, it has a tidy upright habit and is perfectly sized for many peoples' yard. Plus, it's virtually problem-free. What more do you want from a tree?

Be careful what you ask for and painting the ceiling.

My builder did a great job insisting that we incorporate his "signature trademark". A 4 tier trey ceiling. I absolutely loved that ceiling for 10 years. Loved to look at it when I walked ...»
in the room, loved to show it to all my guests and loved to stare at it when I was lying in bed. Loved it UNTIL I had to paint it. Yup, up and down, up and down, but it's done and although took a bit longer then expected looks fabulous. Come take a look.

  • DURING: Here they are dragging the last of a triple trunk oak to the chipper. Wish I had started taking pics when they began. Guess I was just so busy watching, I didn't think about it.
  • DURING: I can already see more sun shining on my japanese maples and my camelia and azalea below.
  • BEFORE: These Bradford Pears are next.
  • AFTER: It's going to take some getting used to. Can't say I "love it". :-(

Feeling a little melancholy watching trees come down

Workers are here taking down some trees in my yard. I feel a lump in my throat as I watch them come down. :-( Most of these trees are Bradford Pears leaning dangerously but a couple are ...»
hardwood. (of course they need to go to for one reason or another) One triple trunk oak in my front yard. It was the first to go. It is amazing how they take these trees down without harming the vegetation around it. I will add more pics as the day goes on.

Thanks Douglas Hunt and Sherrie S ...»
. I keep looking at my yard and I'm not in love yet. Guess I'll have to get used to it. The oak was interfering with the larger "parent" oak and should allow my Japanese maples to get more sun. The shrubs below will definitely benefit but right now, it kind of looks like a really bad haircut to me. lol Neighbors are raving ... I guess they didn't much care for my trees (they don't have many in their yards). You're right ... it's a whole new ballgame now.

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival: Tulip Town, Follow the Rainbow

Earlier this week I shared with you the photo's from our recent visit to RoozenGaarde at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Today I bring you all the colours of the rainbow, straight from ...»
Tulip Town!

This place was so sparkly and colourful, that I kept expecting a rainbow of Skittles to come raining down on us at any moment. I kid you not it was that beautiful.

Enjoy!
