Should the Storm Door Stay or Go?

Sandra

Everything is white, orange and brown in this house. Need some advice on the front entryway please!
While waiting on permits to renovate other parts of the house including a 2 bedroom in-law arrangement I decided to start with the entryway. I'm not a fan of orange or tan and took the plunge painting the sidelights and front door a glossy black to highlight the lovely leaded glass. We've decided on brushed nickel for fixtures throughout the house.
Now that the sidelights and front door is done on the outside, what about the storm door? Should we just get rid of it or I'm thinking of removing it and spray painting it to match the glossy black. What about a brushed nickel color?
The white is just glaring to me yet the brickmold around the outer frame doesn't look bad but you really can't see the front door well, it's like your eye jumps to the white storm door. What do you think? There's more on our blog we are starting to chronicle the renovations done to this lovely house that sat empty for so long.

I would not get rid of the storm door. I would simply paint over the white perhaps with a lighter shade of the black.

@Janet Pizaro Are you suggesting like a gray color? I'm not sure I understand a lighter shade of black.

Don't be surprised that now that your door is black instead of a light colour, the paint peels due to the trapped heat from the storm door. Black draws heat. I'm guessing the door is metal. As for the colour, I think it should match the door behind it, so that it does not become a focal point, thus taking away from the leaded glass. I'm not usually a fan of black front doors, but I think because yours has lots of light, it looks really good.

@Sandra I didn't read your blog, just this post. So I didn't know it was ''as is". I'm sure it will be a labour of love. Have fun!

No not gray. If you have a color swatch from the door usually there are lighter shades available for contrast.
  • I always had a storm door on our last house and loved the view it gave to the outside...but you're right, it does obscure your beautiful door (which already has a window in it.) SO... I think I'd lose it and let the door shine (beautiful paint job, btw)!

@Sandra I still stand by my recommendation to paint it black, since it would not take that much paint...Try living with it over winter, and if you still don't like it remove it then. Sometimes I regret removing mine and it wasn't nice like yours. I have a good insulated door with a window that opens, but it isn't the same thing, and the cold just gets sucked in when we open the door in the winter.

If you can afford to, I recommend a Phantom screen door.(or one like it) where the screen door disappears when open. You can leave screen door open and not see it when you have front door closed. If you want fresh air, open your front door and close the phantom door....never in your way and you won't see the white.

@Gaggy thanks for the idea, I will have to research that before I make a decision, thanks!

I would say if you use the storm door and keep the from door open.. keep a storm door there.. I would however maybe change the style to the Phantom style as mention or else get one that has a pull down type screen.. If it is needed for taking advantage of summer breezes.. while keeping the house safe with the locked door..

BTW, beautiful front door.... love the glass.

@Wanda sinnema Thanks Wanda, I was surprised at how nice it came out, it's just a cheaper door from Menards (my daughter manager of menards told me).

Keep the storm door just paint it black to match the front door and side panels

I agree. Keep the storm door, but paint it. Not only does it add an extra layer of safety/protection, it's great to be able to open the door and allow sunlight in without the bugs!

    Hello Sandra,

Could you paint it with Orange or white paint? Do you have any storms where you live? Do you really need it?

    • Sandra Sandra on May 09, 2021

Hello John, I ended up actually replacing the whole door and sidelights and now I have a black storm door that you barely notice. Yes, we have storms but the door is protected under a porch roof so that helps.

I would keep the storm door and paint it black. The whole idea of a storm door is for insulation so I would vote-stay.

I like the way it looks.

I would also leave the door. You never know what can happen.

We had the same dilemma when moved to another house. We ended up addressing storm smart customer service and installing impact-resistant windows and doors to protect our home from the devastating effects of a hurricane.

I love my storm door. It keeps drafts away.. What I did was paint mine a different color. I used Rustoleum auto primer, and then painted it with Rustoleum. You do not have to take it off if you use plastic to keep the overspray from other parts of the entry.

The black surrounding the sidelights and the front door really makes the leaded glass pop. I'd paint the storm door the same color as you used on the door & sidelight. Very classic look but many people are WAY afraid of black. I just had all of my kitchen cabinets painted black, added brass and brushed stainless handles and then did a simple design of brass color using a permanent sharpie metallic marker. It marker adds a bit of "pop" to the dark cabinets and wall. Everyone so far that has looked at them say they love the look but wouldn't have the nerve to do it. At over 80, I've got the nerve to do most anything and have become tired of always doing the safe thing and thinking about resale rather than making my home exactly how I want it.

Leave it as is, unless it really offends you!

The storm door adds protection to your home, change the color if you would like to.
