Does chalk paint have a gritty finish?

I'm painting an end table, and I'm thinking about priming it, painting it with chalk paint, then using a wax glaze? Would this be the correct strategy? Also, is homemade chalk paint just as good as the real stuff?

Chalk paint is used to create those old and crusty finishes. It sands very easy because of the high chalk content. As a result, it is not very durable. They recommend at least 3 layers of wax to prevent chipping and peeling.

Is spray paint acceptable to use on furniture?

That is a very broad question. I don't mean to be evasive. It depends upon the look you want, the current finish and the type of spray paint you want to use. Do you have a photo of the current piece or a pic of the result you want to achieve?

Janny, spray painting is perfectly fine; keep the area well ventilated, wear a mask and gloves, and avoid painting in a breezy area. Otherwise a good wind will carry some of the paint into and onto the surrounding area. Prime the furniture first, after it dries use 220 grit sand paper to lightly sand the area. Then...paint away. Allow sufficient time for drying between coats. Finally seal your masterpiece with a polycrylic; it dries fast and will prevent chipping.

Thank you Kimberly! I actually spray painted it yesterday. How much time should I have let it dry between coats. I waited 30 minutes- is that enough? Also, I sprayed too close on the door that I removed so I'm going to go back and sand it down and re paint.

Hey Janny! 30 minutes is fine. Some would say 15-20 minutes; so there's nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution. We'd love to see the finished product, please post pics when you can :)

No Janny it doesn't have a gritty finish it is very smooth especially after waxing.. You do have the correct strategy and I haven't tried the homemade stuff yet so can't comment on that. Please post pictures of the finished product would love to see.

Thanks for all the advice! I scuffed it up a little and then added primer. I applied several coats of spray paint and then I used Behr Faux Glaze mixed with brown paint to give it the antique look. I wish I would have used black paint to mix with the glaze. Shoulda' woulda' coulda'. Thanks for all the help! It really helped me decide what I wanted and I learned a lot.

for homemade chalk paint I use a 1 to 3 ratio of paint and baking soda. Is this what you guys are using? To spray I use a Wagner Control Sprayer. Are you using cans of spray paint?

not sure who advised 3 coats of wax..but that is certainly not correct. I put 1 coat on surfaces that will not get much wear (sides of furniture) and two coats on top surfaces(coffee tables) and never have to baby those surfaces...very durable. Annie Sloan herself has the OUTSIDE walls of her Oxford studio painted with her chalk paints. Also the homemade chalk based paints are fine for home projects, but DO NOT think they have the same excellent qualities of the real stuff. I made up a batch and was not happy with the way it distressed and aslo a few days later the left overs really smelled bad. Adding calcium carbonate to latex paint does not make ASCP....you still have the latex in there. Crusty finish????? My pieces are as smooth as a baby's butt ;->
