My sad family room needs your help!

Hi Hometalkers! My poor family room needs some love! We built an addition last fall and I have gotten everything decorated but this room. Somehow the corner TV stand is messing with my head and I can't figure out what to do in here. We use that door all the time as it leads to a covered area and a separate fenced dog potty area. There is no large piece of furniture against a wall to use as an anchor to hang a mirror or artwork or anything. I am including some photos of the rest of the house so you can see what sort of look I lean towards. Thank you all in advance. ..can't wait to hear what you think!
Help! The tv stand is wedge-shaped so can only go in the corner.
Another view.
View from the dining room. I had a sofa table here but the walkway felt tight. Also, this picture angle makes the door look inaccessible, but we use it several times a day.
Wonky little space. Too narrow for much of anything. What do you think about a command center here? Weird since it is in the formal dining room? I don't really have another spot for one and think they are awesome!
My favorite spot in the whole house.Coffee stand/cocktail bar.
Dining room.

Another front room view.

Personally I would reverse the couch and the chair. From the picture it looks like your blocking the door. The worse that will happen you will move it back. See if that works for you.

@Janet Pizaro Thank you, Janet. From the picture I see that it does look like the chair is blocking the door, but it is not. We use that door all the time, it leads to the back covered patio as well as the fenced dog area. I I tried moving the sofa , but is is too long and blocks any path to the door. I should try to get a different angle of photo.

What a lovely home Ginny. Your dining table has me drooling. It's absolutely gorgeous! My first thought was as Janet suggested. Another couple ideas would be to move the TV against the wall in front of where it is plugged into. If its angled back bothers you, just place decorative vases on either side. You'll now have room to pull the chair and ottoman forward and angled toward the TV. To open up the space even more, if you are willing and can change the cable access, you could hang the TV on the wall above the very pretty buffet. Place the sofa on the wall where the cable is plugged in now. If you add a sofa table behind it for lighting and a place for drinks it won't be so far away from the TV. The chair can then be placed at an angle on the wall to the left of the door aimed toward the buffet for easy TV viewing.

@Ginny Cooper Look for baskets large enough to put the cable box and DVD player in to set under the buffet. The weave allows the remotes to still work according to some friends that have done that in their master bedroom. A corner unit should work well with your husbands elk head. I had to laugh at you calling it a stupid head. Considering there's no life left it in, I'd have to say you are correct in that assumption. Ha ha ha! Please do come back and share when all is done. Or even progress pictures are nice!

If your guests don't enter from that door then I would move the couch to chair's spot and definitely mount the tv on that wall

@Jennifer That door leads to our covered back patio and dog area. I hadn't considered mounting the tv on the wall, but can definitely give it some thought!

First thing to do is to get the rug from under the dining table. Put the sofa on the wall opposite the windows...put the rug in front of it. Put the chair with ottoman with its back to the dining table...hang the TV closer to the outside door. Drape a colorful afghan over the back of the sofa for some color and add some colorful pillows to the sofa and one in the chair. If you decide to paint the room, do not go with white! The contrast between the walls and upholstered furniture is to great. Maybe a soft "taupe" would be nice and add some red accents...

These are great ideas! The table is soooo heavy that it has to stay on a rug to move it of we need to but I love the idea of opening up the room by moving get the sofa and chair. I can definitely anchor it with a different rug. Painting is definitely on the books for this winter when outside projects stop. Thank you!

Ginny, Check around and find a carpet for under the dining table that is large enough so that the chairs can be pulled out and not get off of it. How about moving the one that is there now to the ling room. Also, lets add a lamp on the table between the windows, one on the small end-table and one on the chest near the back (sliding) door. That will give ambient lighting all around the room.

Help answer this question...I'm a newbie and quite an amateur, but my first thoughts upon seeing this room: Do you need some sort of very narrow table or coat hooks next to the door? someone likes brown, but an accent color is needed( my choice would be a barn red)- the big, empty wall by the door could use a large mirror or wall hanging of some sort, a rug, afghan, painting, a collection of pictures/ mirrors in wooden frames( incl. red frames), in different sizes, and if you go with 1 wall hanging I'd do a candle sconce, lantern or small round mirror/picture on either side of the large piece. you could add color with a throw blanket and/or ottoman or pillows, too. If you change anything, pls post a picture!-you're lucky to have such a huge addition! Also, a command ctr in this room would be fine, it could be enclosed in a hutch or cabinet so it would be private and not look too casual for the room.

All those thoughts and answers sound great personally my first thought was that the furniture is too bulky for your room. It weighs it down and causes a huge contrast with walls which doesn't help your room. I would paint as suggested, I would place sofa across the wall and move the chair to where sofa is and hang TV on the wall that is along door. I would place a narrow runner on floor behind sofa since that is a high traffic area and that would allow you to bring in color and texture. I would get a huge piece of artwork for wall across sofa on the wall across window. I would bring some nature in by placing a good size plant or tree where the TV is currently. I would look for a tall table sort of like a sofa console or a display table or even a hutch that you could separate top from bottom and use that under the TV to hold TV stuff. You can find cord cover for the cords that you can paint. Look for a light colored carpet that is large enough for sofa and chair the appropriate size can be found online. It should be light to make room appear larger. The rest of home looks country cottage so carry that look into this room with the furniture you purchase at garage sales or thrift shops by painting them and get the art work also in that theme. Paint pieces In a light color that you can distress with a stain over paint or try that chalk paint and wax combo. OK well that's my vision to open room up yet not get glare from window on TV and to make furniture work by making room appear larger. So darker walls lighter floors and TV on wall with used pieces of furniture that you paint to make it all come together but don't forget nature.

Switch places with the console table and tv, allowing space for entry way. Put the sofa against the wall, opening that area going into the dining area. Put armchair where sofa is now.

Place the sofa on the larger wall and the chair where the sofa was, paint just two walls in a mustard color, the larger wall and the door wall this will start a focal point to the room. Find a larger area rug in multi colors with mustard in it. Add throw pillows To complement the new rug. Purchase a tall and wider console chest and this could be found in a consignment or thrift store for your tv and this will add height to your living space being every this seems to be all the same height. Add a large scale picture/mirror over the sofa but not too high. Add a fake tree in corner. Your coffee table, I would replace with a round table because the current yellow one looks more like a children’s toy box.
