I have painted marble tiles (ugly rose color) in my bathroom and ceramic tiles in my other bathroom where they are splashed with water and still look great. I used a bonding primer that requires no sanding first, then a regular latex, semi gloss paint.

First you will have to sand the tile so the paint will adhere. Then prime before painting. You can make that look really nice! Please get rid of the gold!

You need to make sure the paint is heat resistant.
  • how do you think to change another panel ?

Agree with Jennifer - get rid of that gold! Don't know of any paint that would work unless it was one designed to paint wood burning stoves or something else that gets really hot.

Yes! I painted with Annie Sloane Chalk Paint in Coco. My friend had an almost pinkish color tile - turned out great! We sprayed our Gold trimmed fireplace with Rustoleum and we have a gas fireplace as well. You will find the spraypaint link here. http://www.passionatelygrounded.org/?p=435

Yes, just buy a two part epoxy paint. I ave used it on tile porcelain and bathtubs with great success

@Michaelgs yes I did my kitchen slick mexican tile with epoxy paint (1 part already mixed) takes long to cure but solid. It would wear a bit and then once a year I redid it for 7 years until I moved. I have also repaired chipped tile with same paint. You can also use feather finish by ardel if you want a concrete look.

I have a similar looking fireplace (rental house), only the tile is a pinkish terra-cotta-ish. What is a good color to paint? Must be neutral.

All of these methods are temporary only. Ceramic glaze must be fired in a kiln to be permanent. In my opinion, the way the tiles are now is highly superior to any look these other methods will give.

I agree with DysArtTiles. I think it is the orange stained wood that is dating this fireplace. You should paint the wood white or stain the wood a darker color and leave the title alone.

I painted my ceramic tile surround 10 years ago and it still looks great. I painted the first coat with a colored primer for the grout lines, taped off the grout lines with narrow masking tape and then I textured and sponged on a latex paint in a couple of coordinating colors to show texture. I then topped it off with a clearcoat to protect it. I would do it again and again. Super simple.

Yes you can but it is a process for beginner, some of the Pinterest followers show you how with whitewashing looks nice thinking of doing it myself, good luck

We think painting the wood is a great idea. You can also tile over the existing tile. It costs more than painting, but it will give your fireplace a fresh, modern look. Check out these before and afters: http://goo.gl/H3nCEB

On my gas fireplace the gold lines were actually magnets. I popped them right off! No paint at all!

Use Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer for All Surfaces and then use interior latex paint in whatever color and sheen you prefer. I've successfully painted tile in this way many times.

I love the tiles you have. I'd paint the mantle white and paint the gold trim black, so it blends. Just my opinion.
