Kitchen update

Question

We recently replaced the counter top on our island using recycled glass. There are a variety of colors in the counter including red, green, blue, white, brown, and black. I also painted the island cabinets, trying to make them look antique-like. Now we're ready to replace the remaining counter tops, but I haven't a clue about what material or color to use. Right now they are laminate, sort of beige. I'd also like to replace the back splash and sink. We did the remodel in two parts so we could spread out the costs. I'm looking for suggestions. My intentions are to make the island look entirely different from the remaining cabinets, so I definitely don't want them to match, just look nice together.

I LOVE the island top ! As far as what kind of counter tops to go with, I'd keep it pretty simple so the island doesn't have to compete with the counters, and it could get a little busy. Maybe go with a tan/dark cream counter top in Corian or HiMacs and youcan put a seamless sink with these products in any color you want. Subway tile as your backsplash in the same color scheme would give a nice monocromatic look. You can then pull accessories into your kitchen in the colors of your island. You can also have corian and HiMacs extended up your walls as a backsplash which gives a sleek look.

Here's how I found someone to do my counter top. I knew I wanted something different or out of the ordinary, so I began by searching around the internet for counter top materials. After seeing recycled glass, I thought the pictures looked exactly what I was looking for. We live in KCMO, so I googled 'recycled glass counter top in KC' and found this company. http://www.elements-of-green.com/ My husband and I visited their store, looked at some samples and we got started. They had an in-house decorator who came to my house and helped me decide what colors to use based on the other colors in our house. We measured, and within 6-8 weeks, (not real sure of the time) we had our brand new counter top installed in our home. It doesn't have to be sealed and I clean it with Windex.

Wow that's an awesome counter. I'm with Mary on staying neutral on the rest of the counter, which I'm thinking was your intention too. I checked out the website for you island counter and I'm thinking, if the colors are true of your counter and on their website, that the cubist would work very well with your island top. If you want to use another type of counter material there's always quartz. We've had Silestone for nine years now and are very happy with it. We use just dish soap and hot water to clean it. Though they recommend other kitchen cleaners I have extreme allergies and really why use chemicals when soapy water will do? It looks as good as the day it was installed. They have a few whites that I think would look great with your island.... Blanco Maple or Lagoon.... http://www.silestoneusa.com/colors/
