You are supposed to have brush strokes when you use chalk paint. If you want a smoother finish you have to sand them down or use a different type of paint.

I found if I use a small foam roller I won't have any brush marks.

When using chalk paint it is not supposed to cover like regular paint that is for the reason of the brush strokes.Unfortunately if that is not your taste you will have to start again with another type of paint.

Try thinning the chalk paint with a little water so it's not as thick. Start with a teaspoon of water to 1 cup paint. Add more water gradually until you have a good consistency (not too drippy). Then sand between coats with a fine sanding sponge. Good luck with your project!

Use less paint on your brush and paint lightly, you'll have to paint more coats.

Add paint conditioner to your paint and use a high quality foam/cloth 4in. roller. May also use a paint sprayer.

Water, plain water. When I am painting and want a smooth look I start with one line. I paint dip my brush in water, not a lot of water and paint one line end to end. Then I dip my brush in water same line and make it smooth end to end with out lifting the brush. When you smooth it out with water you will still get choppy lines or brush strokes unless you go from end to end. No lines. I always like my tops smooth.

@Sherrie--this sounds like great technique that I will try soon. Thanks. susen

The first line I do from end to end isn't smooth but I don't try smoothing it out until I am done with the like I am painting. I re-read what I had written and it looked confusing. At the end I do a solid brush stroke this keeps it smooth.

You can wipe over the paint once dry with a damp cloth this leaves a smooth finish. Then wax

Hope you are happy with your finished project!
