Help! How would I insulate this box attractively to hold ice?

Sandy
by Sandy
I am turning this old tackle box into a beautiful wine cooler. I am struggling with the best and most attractive way to insulate the right side of the cooler (to hold ice for white wine). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am on a budget.
Thank you

I would see if I could find a stryofoam container in the right size. I think this would be your easiest (and cheapest) option. I would explore at your local recycle depot.

Or line it with foam board and caulk the seams. I would drip some holes in the wood bottom (just in case something leaks) so the water could get out.

How about trying to find an insulated bag. They are not expensive and I think it would serve the purpose.

think I might use a couple of the right size buckets/ cylinders that would be removable and waterproof

How about lining it with foam board, caulking the seams (as mentioned above), and since you'd like it to be beautiful...cover it with cork sheeting, with a border of wine corks sliced lengthwise. You'd have to investigate the most effective glue to use.

I think I would just buy the bottle/can shaped freezer packs and use them to hold the bottles stationary and keep them cool at the same time...Buuuuut that's jus me.

Go to a glass shop and see if they have any sheets of styrofoam. Cut to size, and insert. I would recommend lining a removeable insert though, possibly made from metal sheeting . . . reused duct work?

very easy to buy insulated lunch bags at the dollar store and they should hold two bottles each. velcro them together. or use bungie cords. some lunch bags can hold dry things others can hold ice. works well. have fun.

A piece of copper flashing (used in roofing) to form the inner lining with the insulating foam sandwiched between the outer box and inner box. Attach small finger pulls to the ends of the copper box so you can lift it out to empty and clean it. (If you beat the copper with a hammer before building the box, you'll get the high end look of hammered copper). To protect the wine glasses in the left hand compartment use soft foam covered with velveteen or even a soft chamois. Line the lid with cork or the fancy wood cover from a boxed wine case. Attach strips of leather lacing or cordage to hold wine corkscrews to the underside of the lid. Don't forget some moist towelettes to wipe out the glasses when done.

You could likely get rigid styrofoam insulation for a reasonable price at your local builders store. It's usually used to insulate the outside of basement walls, so it will be sturdy but easy to cut to size. You could leave it unfinished, or use paint or plastic fabric to 'pretty-fy' it.

Spray foam at Home Depot insulation
