You should not "just" take them. That could be considered theft. Many stores buy and use them to off load goods from shipping company's. Please ask the retailer if you may have them. Many shipping/ freight companies might give you some used/ damaged ones. :)

No you cannot take them unless they are clearly marked as garbage. Most stores have to pay for pallets. If anything go inside and ask first. You can go on craigs list, alot of time they are posted to be free or cheap.

No, definitely ask first. Some companies (like the one I work for) get money back when they ship trailer loads back to the pallet company to re-use/ recycle. If anyone is caught taking them, it considered theft and they risk losing their job. Other companies don't mind because it saves them money not to have them hauled away.....always ask first!

A lot of the times if you go into a store and ask the manager they will give you a few. never just take them because they will charge you with theft. you can find them where they are building houses and most of the time they also will just give them to you. there is a site called freecycle.com it is free to join and you find them there where people just want them gone. you can't sell or buy anything on this site it is all free , you give stuff away for free or you get things from others that are free. good luck I hope you find all you need.

Ask first as everyone has mentioned. I wanted to interject as well, some pallets have been soaked in nasty chemicals in order to keep them from rotting. You need to look up the info online as to what the abbreviations mean that have been stamped or branded into the wood. Of course it also depends on what you want to use them for.

You'll normally find them listed on craigslist.org for free, but many stores will allow you to take your pick from those not painted (I get mine from Wal-Mart and from a local pipe supply business).

Please ask at the store first!
  • Thanks everyone! I promise I will ask first, don't want to do time for "pallet poaching"!
