Faux Metal Planters

Our new house has a front porch that calls for something on the larger side. Which also means a larger expense. But thanks to this fun metal effects reactive paint by Modern Masters, I was able to DIY something out of wood that TOTALLY looks like the aged zinc patina I was going for. I finished these just in time to plant them out with some colorful fall cabbages and mums, and I'm already thinking ahead to spring flowers!
Guess what these are made of?
All these planters took were some 1 x 8s, a few dozen pocket screws, and paint.
I used pocket screws to attach two widths of 1 x 8s as well as the legs on each corner.
Simple decorative molding helps to mimic the details on zinc planters I was hoping to copy.
The metal effects paint is so fun to work with. First I primed (shown here). Then I painted one coat of the a bronze reactive paint for the finish I achieved on my planters. Finally, I went over with a second coat of the bronze paint, and while it was still wet, I applied the blue patina aging solution with a spray bottle.
Can you believe that's wood?!
I added a false bottom so the pots can actually rest right the bottom rather than have to be transplanted... for flowers like these mums and cabbages, it means I just pop the 8" pot right in and insta-planter.
These are the perfect accessory for our front porch. They measure 4 feet wide and approx. 18" tall.
Close up of the finish.
What's your favorite fall plant? I'm a cabbage girl...
