A simple way to test this is to remove the "button" and test the operation by touching the 2 wires together. This will tell you if the switch is bad or if the problem lies with the low voltage power supply or the dinger itself.

  • KMS is correct on this trouble shooting issue. It is common for door bells to stop ringing over time. One reason is tiny spiders make cobwebs inside the back of the switch. Over time this prevents the contacts from working. Another reason is these switches are very low cost. The contracts over time corrode preventing them from working. A new switch should do the trick. you can find them at your local hardware stores.

When I have been asked to repair door bells by customers, I typically suggest that they purchase a wireless door bell replacement. These are only $25-$30 and take perhaps 5 minutes to install. -Remove the old exterior bell button. -Replace with new wireless bell button. -Plug in the new interior bell unit into an outlet and you're done.

Everyone is right on their comments. The easiest is to start with the button, check wires on the bell itself that nothing is loose.

If the doorbell itself is broken, and the push button outside and the doorbell transformer is operating, you could consider a doorbell extender. These extenders typically work by connecting a wireless transmitter to your existing doorbell transformer. When the doorbell button is pressed, the transformer signals the transmitter to send a wireless signal to a plug-in or battery operated receiver.
