Are you a fan of Fixer Upper and Joanna Gaines decorating style? I'm obsessed and love all the vintage and unique finds that she decorates with. One thing available in her online store is a Dutch Tulip Crate. It is pricey, though, and I found a way to make one using a free broken crate.
Doesn't it look just like the real thing? There was even printing on some of the boards. Real tulip crates painted the grower's names on the sides of their crates.
I found this crate that had no bottom and a broken board. Most people would have thrown it in the garbage, but I knew it could have a new life.
I cut two sections of the crate apart leaving the posts sticking up on each end. Tulip crates are made like this so that they can stack without damaging the flowers.
Then I cut a rectangle of hardware cloth to the appropriate size. It was attached with a staple gun around the entire crate bottom. A true tulip crate would have a supporting piece of wood on both ends and in the middle. I'll be adding these as soon as I find some old rustic wood.
There are so many uses for these crates.....They can serve as a tray for serving guests, as a decorative centerpiece, or as an organizational tool for storing your belongings.
I love the look of the old rustic wood against the hardware cloth.
And you'd never know that this was originally cut apart from a crate.
Let me know what you think of this DIY project! Don't you love something that is relatively simple and looks like an expensive item you'd buy at the store?
