How do I fix glass patio slider lock?

I have one of those sliding back doors that is mostly glass and has a thin metal frame around it. But it has a bad lock on it. The lock is not catching the hole well and when it does its possible to wiggle the door from the outside and unlock it. I want to fix it but don't know how. I'd also like to be able to lock it from the outside so I can take my dog for a walk that way. Our apartment is 3rd floor but due to slope its level with the back lane. How do I fix it and get a lock on the outside for it? Any suggestions?

call you landlord, they are obligated to give you a door that locks properly

My suggestion whether you take it or not is do not touch this.Call your landlord. If for some reason you try to fix this and it does not go the right way you will then be responsible .

I doubt the landlord will fix it the way you want to, so if you don't mind paying for it yourself in order to have it lock from both the inside and out, I'd suggest ask for approval, and then buy a new lock for it and install it yourself. I found a video that should help you. You can get the keyed locks at HoDe or Ls. We did this at our last home where we too had a sliding patio door that we needed to be able to lock from the outside once we built a garage out back.

The landlord is responsible, for providing a safe and secure residence. Anything that can put you, your family, and possessions, in danger, should be immediately fixed. All doors, and windows, must be able to lock, and stay locked, until you open them. A peep hole in the front door, is part of your security. I would ask for a security screen, made for patio doors. Which is available in home improvement stores. If the measurements are taken in, some of these stores offer installments, when you buy them, and they can be locked from inside, and outside. Sliding glass doors, are notorious, for they ease of opening from outside. My son did it when he was ten, cause we accidentally got locked out, and we lived on the second story.

There is a device that can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot that fit in the bottom of the door. This bar is removed in and out as needed, not expensive!

Call your landlord. You shouldn't have to pay to fix something. What if something else gets broken because of your fix? Then the landlord will probably want money from you.

Adjust the bracket on the door frame and cut a wood rood to put in the door track.

I to have a sliding back door that I need to replace the lock on. But I use the dowel to lock up from the inside and want to go out the front door. However if I want to go out the back ...no way of locking. I have this on my list of things to do also. Replaced one at the old house and yes it's pretty easy but I agree with Kathy, your landlord should replace it for you to be safe. God luck!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I do use to use a stick as many of you suggest. That partly helps. But Then its still impossible to go out and lock or unlock and come in. We are level a the pack and want to be able to go out that way to walk the dog etc.

Hi Popeye... I know the perfect solution for your sliding door lock problem. I suffered the same problem that you have. Except worse because my sliding panel was on the outside. Seems some sliders are one way and some the other. So I couldn't even use the stick (we use cut off old hockey sticks in Canada for this). And I wanted the same two-way capability that you did. That was a couple years ago in two succesive homes!!! So I developed a lock that does this. It's called PaDIOLOK. It gives you two way locking and unlocking and security. So you can come or go... without even a key as it's got a keypad on it. Its a new product and just about to be launched. FULL DISCLOSURE: yes I am involved with the company. Its a new product but it's for real. And I am responding to let Popeye know about PaDIOLOK as it will help him and maybe others. Hope no one takes offense to advising of our own product. It is the only lock that we know about that is Two-way... & Far more Secure and retrofits to your existing slider whether aluminum or vinyl. And its keyless. The bad news is its not quite out yet but you've a couple options via the website to be advised of when it will be available... which is soon. Hope you find a solution or can cope til PaDIOLOK is available.

Hi Popeye, Thanks for you interest. We are doing field testing and I'm told that it is going very well. Should be selling PaDIOLOK by the end of December 2015.
