Small kitchen for house in the bushveld

I need a kitchen corner for a small house. One section would be against the wall (with window) about 2.5 meters. This is where the basin and water currently is. Then extending from the corner there is only about 1.5 meters up to the window, so Im thinking of putting the gas stove in the corner and then use the space under the window for working space. Can one put the gas stove in the corner facing to the diagonal?

Yes you can place any Item on the diagonal. I would box in the space behind it and put in cleaning friendly finished shelving. Good luck with your project.

Thanks Linda. What I like about putting it diagonal is that it creates an unbroken line. That is the only way in which it can fit in the corner.

Do you having the plumbing installed yet?
    • Elna Elna on Oct 11, 2015
@Janet Pizaro Hi Janet - this is an old house so yes there is plumbing, but that would actually be possible to change. Not very well done in the first place anyway

You can place the range on a diagonal but it uses up a lot of wall space. The base cabinets have to be installed far enough from the range (which is deeper than base cabinets) so that the drawers can pull out and not hit the range OR the handle on the range AND that they range door can open without hitting the cabinetry. Using a 30" (76.2cm) range the cabinetry would start approx. 46" (1.17 meters) or more from the corner. The wall cabinets also have to be positioned so that the open doors do not hit the vent hood if you are using one. Open shelves are probable not an issue. If you don't mind the sink not centered under the window, slide it down (may have to relocate the plumbing a bit) so that it is centered on the left half of the window and utilize the space between your existing cabinetry and door. Put the trash under the sink cabinet. Without all the measurements of the space. its hard to figure out what other layouts could be. Another option could be to a straight run (including the range) opposite the sink wall of cabinetry (galley style). build a half wall approx 6" higher than the cabinet height behind the new cabinet run. If there is enough space between the kitchen area and where the table is, an countertop overhang on the back of the wall could be used for bar height stools.

You want to be careful how you place your appliances from the start. I would suggest you do some research online for space planning ideas for small kitchen spaces. Anytime you place anything on the diagonal, you tend to end up wasting space so that your surrounding counters can accommodate the angle, which when you have such a small space to start with, you can't afford to do. Plus if I'm looking at your photo correctly, even with your stove in the corner, it would still be somewhat under the window, which can present it's own set of problems. Good luck, would love to see the finished product!

@The Redesign Habit Hi - Yes I would like to be able to get an app or something where one can play around with the space. Agree with the diagonal wasting space. If I have the stove in the corner though that might be the only option. It is quite a small space so I dont have so many options

You can hang shelves above Windows, an island of back to back upper cabinets (setting off set to the walkway) with extended counter top creating a place to eat. This would help divide the rooms. The stove n sink going under back window then maybe replace wood stove with a Eden pure (It is a portable heat source) placing fridge where wood stove is setting.

Thanks. Yes the small wood stove is one of the limitations because it can't be moved. I've been thinking of an island but this is a small house and this room serves all activities except sleeping and bath. Not sure about creating a division that will break up the space. But you have given me a new direction of thought

I drew up an idea for you. It's not to scale since I didn't know your measurements so it's possible that it may not work for you, but thought it worth suggesting. Instead of making an L shape kitchen, why not make a mini galley kitchen using a half wall between the kitchen and dining area where your stove could be placed between two base cabinets giving you more prep space? Click on the drawing below to see what I think might be possible.

If you put the stove catty corner you will lose alot of space. The sink would fit better...I don't see a fridge. How about the space on the other side of the entry door? Maybe a 84 0r 90 inch pantry cabinet? I have a 15 inch wide 84 " tall pantry cabinet next to my stove..I have more cabinet space in it then I had in 4 top cabinets. I took out the top cabinets and put in shelving and now I have a place for the hand made pottery and antique bottles I collect. I never had room for those things and they were kept in boxes out of the way. I love open shelves..it makes a small kitchen look larger. Unless you have to have the curtains for privacy take them down. Put a shelf above them and maybe across the windows for some plants. Curtains are dirt catchers in a kitchen...and windows letting in light just makes a place look fresher. Good luck with what you decide. I am curious on what you will do.

Can you get a smaller table and put it like Becky drew? When not serving dinner, you could use it for counter space to work on. I did not see a refrigerator...do you have a place for one?

Back to your question of a diagonal stove......I would rather see a diagonal sink and then put your stove where the sink is now.....might have to shorten your curtains for saftey sake but IMO it would be more convenient. Shouldn't have to change the plumbing much.....since all are close together.

I have a small kitchen that I needed more work space for. So I used tall pantry cabinets making the storage vertical ...and took an old microwave on rollers with a butcher black top and put it under the counter to be rolled out when I need more work space. Also it has shelves under it..so I have more storage space. I end up with more storage and work space then if I would have kept to the regular box cabinets. I also use open shelves on the top.. Look through places like Pinterest for ideas...it can be very helpful.

IKEA is what I used when redoing my kitchen a few years ago. They have an app to help plan and also many different size cupboards and appliances to work with. Good luck!
