Before: Staircase original to the house 1984-Brown paint was tired. We started with wanting to change the staircase color & stain it dark.
Before. Stripping the wood finish with power hand sanders & 60grt paper.
Not a fun project, especially with 101 spindles. After stripping the knee board, which took 2 days- we decided to replace the spindles with iron! WIN/WIN - my ultimate goal=wood floors.
Word of advice -Don't use Citrustrip it only removes the 1st layer of poly and becomes very goopy! Urrgh! Which took additional time to sand off and wash with mineral spirits.
Gel stain in JAVA by General Finishes purchased on Amazon- it's also sold at local Antique stores. The trick is to go slow & not paint it on. Wipe on- wipe off. Lesson learned after resanding again and again- I'm not good with stain.
We have 3 dogs so we removed the wood spindles and replaced with iron 1 section at a time. I ordered our single knuckle & plain spindels online affordablestairparts.com

For 101 spindles (I ordered 105) & 202 shoes we paid $628.00 which included shipping. Much easier than sanding the wood spindles.
My poor husband sanding, staining & replacing!! I focused on the paint, changed the trim (doors upstairs are ultra white) and the walls are lighter now. Fresh!
This weekend, new carpet for the stairs & wood hallway! It's been 6 grueling weeks but we're very happy with the results.
