What Do You Do With an Outdated Chair and a Men's Flannel Shirt? Look!

I know nobody likes these old Eastlake chairs. They're small, fussy and blah. So I decided to take this one a little over the top, a little campy...
Before...
I didn't want to spend a lot on fabric and I wasn't feeling anything I had in my stash. Plaid is popular at the moment as are flannels so...
I used the back of the shirt to upholster the seat. The top of the chair is upholstered in an old quilted pillow sham I found while junkin. But wait til I turn it around...
I upholstered the back side in the front of the shirt complete with buttons and the pocket. I had some scrap leftover from the pillow sham so this dapper dude got a pocket square. I used a roll of nail head trim to finish it all off. And painted the frame in a custom mix color. The chair's a little cheesy but furniture can be fun!

I, also, have a Eastlake chair, one that someone was throwing out. The wood is all in fine condition, but definitely needs to be reupholstered, and I want to paint the wood. Did you sand the wood before painting? I thought a light sanding, so as not to disturb the carving, but if I don't have to sand beforehand, that would be even better! Thanks for any advice you can offer! Donna
