Painting over painted cabinets

Does it matter what kind of paint is used if you don't know what kind of paint you're painting over? I'm guessing the previous homeowners used a latex.

For kitchen cabs some cleaning with TSP, a light scuff sand and some primer...then latex. and you should be fine.

Thanks, KMS Woodworks. I hadn't considered primer, since the cabinets are all ready white, and I intended to go back over them with a similar color. But, will probably use it since I have a gallon of primer.

Yes, it does matter. If these cabinets are in the kitchen, you want to assure adhesion of the new finish. There are some latex bonding primers that might work. However, it is best to err on the side of best practce and use a oil based primer on these surfaces. We like the XIM products http://ximproducts.com/index.asp

Always prepare your substrate properly. Never assume anything when it comes to kitchen cabinets. Yes to TSP, light scuff and excellent primer. Also, I just ran into a problem w a door that looked fine, went to sand it and it chipped and cracked. It was actually baked on plastic, which had not been wrapped to the back side. What a nightmare. Inspect them carefully before proceeding! :-)

I agree with ProTect and Patricia, always prime kitchen cabinets if you are not 100% sure of the existing finish even if keeping the same color. I usually use a shellac primer. It seals everything. Smells bad, but dries very quickly. I also seal all my kitchen cabinets after painting. A good DIY sealer is Stays Clear by Ben Moore. It is a high quality sealer that won't yellow. Very important over light color cabinets.

Thanks everyone for the input! I'll prime after a thorough cleaning and light sanding. Now, I just need to decide on the just right shade of white, if that's possible. And some slight improvements in our weather, of course. Wish me luck!
