I would try Caladium Bulbs, they come in many various colors to bring color to an interesting dark area. Also certain New Guinea Impatience, astilbes, small delicate ferns, Bleeding hearts, are just some of my ideas to help you. Best of Luck..always try and go for self-seeders or plants whose tubers you can re-use.

Sorry to disagree the bulbs are so small and shallow roots have grown them in 3" by 5" boxes

Ok no problem.Coleus work well in shade and come in a large variety of color which is an annual.Coral bells is the new hosta again a very large assortment of color and a perennial .Ferns are a perennial and as well come in a lot of varieties. The list can go on and on. If you are not happy with these choices let me know and I will give you more suggestions.

Janet, spot on with regards to window boxes are not the location for anyone to plant bleeding hearts or astilbes. One I did not consider though might be to try Lanata. Love spiller look.

Coleus and impatiens would work...Coleus is super easy to grow from seed, too.

Fall-blooming hardy cyclamen, begonias, and blue wood aster, would all be beautiful but my best choice would have to be Japanese anemones.
