OK, so a spare pillow each and extra blanket would be the go. Some flowers in the room. Ensure that there are bedroom lamps to read by or in case they need to get up in the night. Tissues in the bathroom or bedroom by the bed. A mirror for doing makeup or checking overall appearance before leaving the room. Clean fluffy towels and soap at the end of the bed. A plastic glass or tumbler for teeth brushing. Ensure there is some hanging space and somewhere to put clothes and toiletry bags. Don't clutter the room too much if they will have suitcases with them. Air the room to ensure no stale or musty smells and ensure they are able to open a window if need be during the night. Of course it goes without saying that clean sheets and a clean bathroom with extra loo rolls and ensure they have a spray they can use in the toilet or air freshener in the bathroom. Shower cap and hair dryer and extra towel in case of hair washing. It is good to be able to wrap a towel around the head for long hair and if you only have one towel to dry yourself it is pretty tricky.

Agree with Carole. All I can add is make sure the plugs are accessible and try and leave plugs for recharging phones, tablets etc. I love to make my guests feel special by leaving a small little gift with their towels. You get really inexpensive bath gels or dark chocolate or a bottle of wine of something like that. Even a fancy little note book with a pen - really does not have to cost a lot - just a something small. Check the temperature and if hot make sure there is a fan or cold make sure there is a heater. Other than that, be the perfect host and enjoy the company.

I would fold up a nice selection of towels in a basket with some personalized travel size shampoo/soap/etc.
  • The thing I enjoy most about hotel rooms in the de-cluttered look and feel. Simplicity. Cleared off surfaces, convenient little extras like USB wall chargers. Little travel soaps and shower gels too! Good luck! It's awesome that you're even going through the trouble of doing this!

Free room of clutter or anything personalizing room. No family pics or accessories. Basic, clean and simple. Splurge on bedding and pillows, not throw pillows. Great towels.

These suggestions are great, can only add a couple, mints by the bedside and racks for the suitcases off the floor to have easy access to clothes and not having to bend over or stoop down. Reader's Digest on nightstand. access to telephone if they do not have cell phones. Water carafe by bed for pill taking medicines if need be. Enjoy your company

Ensure they have somewhere to hang their used bath towels to dry. You don't want to have to supply clean towels everyday but it can take a while for a towel that is used to dry properly. Personally I hate it if I stay somewhere and have to hang damp or wet towels over the back of bedroom chairs and the towel is still damp if I want to use it again. Unless you have heated towel rails in the bathroom, towels don't dry well in the bathroom where the air is moist after a shower has been run.

My guest room has it's own bath. I purchase small bottles of shower gel, shampoo and many different bars of soap, etc. I also include toothbrushes, paste and mouthwash as well as 2 razors (his and hers) and place them in a basket. The bedroom has 2 dressers a chair and a small desk. Two night tables. The room is decorated with photos and paintings of the places our family has visited. No people in the photos! I also purchase a few magazines with subjects my guests are interested in. Lasts guests magazines were Handyman and Quilting. They couldn't thank me enough!

We do much of what's written above. In the guest bathroom I have a basket with a variety of sample sized toiletries, including: 1. New tooth brushes and paste and cups for rinsing. 2. A variety of shampoos and conditioners, lotions and mouth wash. 3. Plenty of fluffy freshly laundered bath & hand towels along with some wash clothes. We have towel warmers in our bathrooms so I make sure to tell the guests how to turn them on so they'll have a warm towels after their shower. In the bedroom:1. I add some magazines that I think the guest will enjoy along with reading lights on either side of the bed. 2. Comfortable seating, love seat in one sofa in our other guest suite. 3. A place to easily use their laptops, tablets, or cells phones with access to outlets for charging. Make sure to give them your WiFi password too. 4. We have ceiling fans in our guest rooms, but a table or floor fan will do. 5. I have neck issues so I feel it's nice to offer a variety of pillows for their comfort, whatever that might be. 6. Different weights of blankets so they can find the perfect mix for their comfort level. Extra blankets are stored in the closet.7. Room to hang clothing. Make sure you have empty hangers for both tops/dresses and slacks for them in case they don't bring their own.8. Printed instructions of how to use the remotes and a listing of what channels are available, or the passwords for using Hulu, Netflix, and the like for their use while visiting.

I read a great article once that noted 1) make sure extra toilet paper is within reach 2) that toilet paper should be the good stuff 3)if within budget get a curved shower rod 4)large, fluffy towels for the guest bath. It all sounded so good I thought I deserved to be pampered as well as guests...now I enjoy my bathroom more everyday.

I enjoy nice sheets on the bed and good soap for bathing when I visit someone. I usually have my own shampoo but tissues near the bed is always good and a water pitcher with glass is so nice if you wake up in the night. Have plenty of hangers and somewhere for them to put their suitcases. Just think of things you might enjoy.

Very good TV, workable clicker, internet access, little soaps & shampoos you previously stole, Andes Candies strewn tastefully around the room, table radio set to local station without offensive music, scrubbed bathroom, clean smell (not hospital antiseptic or bad feet), sparkling clean windows, hair dryer, empty drawers, little pieces of fresh bread. Absolutely no fishtanks.
