Sunflower Coaster Cute Gift Idea #SpitChallenge

A few weeks ago my husband and I cut down a walnut tree, I fell in love with the rings that this old tree had and saved myself several pieces of it. Not knowing what I was going to do with them I let set outside to dry waiting for an idea to come to mind. This past weekend it hit me I could make coasters.
For this project you will need the following: Orbital sander, 180 grit sandpaper and 220 grit sandpaper, wire brush, Unicorn Spit, syringe, polyurethane, and of course disc's of wood.
I originally had let my wood discs sit outside for 4 weeks, but I wanted to make sure they were dry so I put them in my oven at 250 degrees for an hour (the thicker the disc is the longer it stays in the oven).

After my discs were dry, and cooled off I took them outside and sanded them. I started with my 180 grit and finished with 220 grit until smooth. You can also smooth the back down if you want.
After my prep, I sat down and with my syringe squirted out my Unicorn Spit onto a paper plate ( I used Midnight Blackness, Lemon Kiss, and I also put Lemon Kiss and Molly Red Pepper side by side). Walnut has such a dark center so I decided I would attempt to make my interpretation of a sunflower. In the center of my disc I used my finger and rubbed in my black, then I used a variety of brushes for my petals. For my petals I dipped my brush into my side by side Unicorn Spit and then just dabbed it onto my disc, I did this all the around, then I used a dry clean brush went back in to do a little blending on my petals. After I was done making my sunflower I put my disc back into the oven to dry ( I don't like to wait, you don't have to use the oven if you don't mind waiting until it drys). Once my Unicorn Spit became cloudy looking I knew it was dry, I removed it from the oven and let cool down. After it cooled down I applied my polyurethane (I used gloss), I ended up putting on a total of 3 coats of polyurethane.
This is my end results, I will be sanding the back of it down and gluing a thin cork bottom onto it. Hope you find this helpful, and fun. I really enjoyed making my coaster.
