There have been amazing furniture pieces created using Unicorn Spit Gel Stain (tm) featured on Hometalk! I had never tried it and was so afraid. Well, hopefully this very first attempt will inspire someone. You don't have to think big furniture to make a stunning accent piece!
See the before photos, I started with a little old recipe box I got at a thrift store.
I got maybe an ounce of each color as a trial. I got Zia Teal and Blue Thunder. You can't get Unicorn Spit Gel Stain here: http://www.unicornspit.com/ or here http://thefurniturespa.com/
Here's my simple project:
I sanded down the box, and painted the inside with white chalk type paint. I lightly, almost dry-brushed the Blue Thunder Spit inside.
Next I put some blue and teal on the top, with a syringe, just random flowing lines across the top. I blended it by running my fingers, to drag the colors horizontally across the top. Beautiful! And so easy!
I applied I think 4 coats of Tung Oil Finish to the top. Lightly sanded between coats.
I put several coats of polyurethane on top and inside, sanding between coats..and voila!
This is my first post here because I really wanted to share a small simple project that was so inspiring to me!
I started with this old thrift store recipe box. I sanded it down a bit to remove the old varnish.
I removed the hinges, and cleaned up the inside too.
Completely beautiful
Here is the finished box! I love I did allow the Tung Oil Finish and poly coats to dry, and lightly sanded between each coat.
Detail view of the top, you can see I let some grain show through, putting the spit on lighter in some areas and darker in others.
Detail of the inside. Just a funky fun wash of Blue Thunder Unicorn Spit over the white chalk type paint.
