I want to be sure I hit a joist on the ceiling so I need to know how to find it! Also, the flange is going to be wider than the joist so how can I be sure its secure when I attach it? Its going to be suspended over a knee wall, not on the wall itself. Can you help?

Thanks, Janet, but I need to suspend it from the ceiling which wouldn't give me any support from the wall. I want to be sure i use a joist in the ceiling. What do you think if I uses a pine board that would span the joist and attach the flange to that? Btw, I love that show!

@Patricia I do not see why not, however I am not an expert and do not want to mislead you in any way.Thats why I posted the site, unless you already looked at it. Let me know the results.

Patricia, you can find a joist the same way you can find a stud, using a stud finder tool or by knocking. When you knock on a wall with a stud or joist behind it, it will sound solid or have a lower pitch. Your idea of securing a pine board to the ceiling to span the area you'll be hanging the pipe shelves from will help, but for safeties sake I would secure the shelves to the top of the wall also. That is if you meant a half wall (sometimes called a pony wall) instead of a knee wall. A knee wall is a short wall in a finished attic where the slant of the roof meets the wall as shown in the drawing I did below. If that is what you are talking about then, it would help to see a photo of the area you want to add the shelf.

@Patricia I thought so. It's so easy to get terms like that mixed up. I still think it would be best to attach the pipes to both the ceiling and the top of the pony wall for stability.
