We have bought a house in France and love it but it's very dark. The lounge or saloon as it known hear has a lot of dark beams, my furniture is dark as I had it in an old farm house so its all antique not modern. I think moving forward I will go shabby chic and change using Anne Sloan chalk paints with gold underneath. Please help with what colour on top as I've never done this.
Thank you in advance x

Shabby chic seems to be a good idea to lighten up the room. But is there a way for you to share a picture so we can help further with suggestions?

Such a shame you feel the need to paint antiques, but they are yours. I would add light with strategically placed mirrors and full spectrum lighting along with lighter area rugs and off white walls. Possibly slipcover the upholstered furniture in light fabrics.

Would hesitate to paint antique furniture. You may love this home right now, but it may not be a forever home. There are options. Lighter walls, mirrors, and wonders can be done with lighting.

Here's my 2 cents...If you haven't done it yet...I would suggest putting up drywall bet. the dark beams this will help lighten the dark ceiling. Paint the drywall a creamy white. You can add & scatter across the ceiling some distressed decorative ceiling tiles for visual interest. For the furniture...From what I can tell it sounds like you have traditional furnishings DO NOT paint your furniture. Instead I suggest changing the stain to a lighter color. I suggest for your largest pieces of furniture a cream, a pale gold, or a pale contrasting color to the gold curtains. For the smaller pieces of furniture I suggest keeping them a light complementary color. You can add pops of color in throw pillows, or even merino throw blankets. If you want to add some softness you can add some faux fur pillows as well. I would also add some table or floor lamps around the room to add to the overhead lighting. Hope this helps.
