DIY Wood Crate

A few years ago my wife heard the school librarian complain about the crate she was using to hold books; the crate kept falling apart, and she had to buy a new one every year. My wife thought I could make a crate that would hold up better, so she volunteered me to make a new crate for the library. I love the library (and my wife), so how could I refuse.

The crate I made for the library has held up very well. I have been told that kids drag the crate, sit on top of the crate, and sometimes even sit in the crate. This past summer I was asked to make another crate to match the first one.

I used 1x12 to make the sides of the crate and 1x6 to make the bottom.

I attached the sides of the crate using pocket holes.

I attached the bottom pieces by using countersink screws.

I used Rust-Oleum Kona stain with a matte polyurethane finish. Then I attached cabinet pulls.

Now the library has two crates. I hope they hold up well for years to come. I really like them, and I may have to make one for my home one day.

I love the way this turned out, but am curious to know why three separate pieces of wood were used for the base?

@Valerie I am so glad you like the crate. The reason I used three pieces for the base was the size of the crate. The librarian asked me to make a crate 17x24. This made it too big to use 1x12 for the bottom. I chose to use 1x6 because it was cheaper than buying a sheet of plywood.

@Erik Bennett That makes sense - thanks for getting back to me - I appreciate it.
