From Restore Step Table to Elegant Grandma Lego Table #SpitChallenge

Our local Habitat For Humanity Restore Store was having a make over contest and I went in to look for my project. I had in mind upcycling a step table to a Lego table but when I saw this gem for $9.00 the elegant lines said Grandma. I immediately imagined children playing with Lego in Grandma's living room. My project was set.
Step Table after Unicorn SPiT Makeover.
Hard to believe the change in this Step Table after Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain and Glaze and some Rust-oleum Metallic Sea Shell. How to steps follow.
Here is the table BEFORE.
Here are the other items I picked up at the Restore. White Behr interior paint, Rust-oleum Metallic Accents paint finish in Sea Shell and a frame to hold the Lego base plate.
The table and other Restore finds.
The next step was to sand the table tops so I could use Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain and Glaze in One.
Tops are sanded, sides & legs painted.
I taped it off and painted the legs and sides and edges.
Rust-oleum Metallic Sea Shell and White Behr
I started painting the legs with the Rust-oleum Metallic Sea Shell and four coats in I realized for the sides and edges I would need to use the White Behr (paint+ primer in one) first then the Rust-oleum. I applied two coast of each.
I used White Ning, Zia Teal and Blue Thunder.
Now I was ready for the fun part. Applying the Unicorn SPiT. I chose White Ning, Zia Teal and Blue Thunder because I love the blues. The Lego base plate I found, at Walmart, was beige so I wanted to apply the Unicorn SPiT lighter in some areas so the wood tones would show through. I applied the SPiT with my hands, let it dry and layered more until I got the colours and blends the way I liked.
I seal the SPiT with Watco Butcher Block.
Next Step was to seal the Unicorn SPiT. I like to use Watco Butcher Block Oil Based sealer. It doesn't yellow the same as Poly but is oil based. I applied with a sponge brush then, within a few minutes of applying, I used a piece of t-shirt to wipe off the excess
Varathane Diamond Wood Finish in Gloss.
The last step to seal the Unicorn SPiT is Varathane Diamond Wood Finish Gloss. It's water based and is non-yellowing. It self levels so you don't have brush stokes and is low VOC. I put on four coats to get a nice deep finish. Unicorn SPiT is known for its' 3D effect and this Varathane really enhances that look.
The table is done. Now for the Lego.
I love the way it turned out. Pictures don't do it justice. Now to add the frame, base plate, Lego and basket.
Now it's a Lego table for Grandma's house.
I ended up using a smaller frame that I found at another garage sale. I SPiT on it to loosely match the SPiT on the table. I haven't attached the frame and base plate but plan to offer Command Strips to the new owner so they can be removed when the Grand kids grow up. Then it can be a beautiful multi purpose table.
Here is the BEFORE and AFTER
This beauty is done and ready for it's forever home. Sadly it's not mine because I have a few more years before I'm called Grandma. (At least I hope so.)
