Pallet Wood Up-cycled Into One Heavy Duty Barn Door Bed!

I'd wanted a rustic barn door style bed forever. Finally convinced the hubster it was something we could do using pallet wood I'm always up-cycling. Here's our build.

This photo shows the almost complete bed. We're adding a "top" or shelf/ledge to the tops of both head and foot board.

After measuring the size needed to accommodate our king-size mattress, we got to work. 2x4's and 2x6's were used to bulk up the varying sizes (widths) of pallet boards. I didn't want a "perfect" look, so spaced them out to my liking. 2x4's were used to imitate the design on a barn door and the 2x6 was placed on the bottom for mounting the hardware to hold the side rails and center support (also a 2x6 plank). We adjusted the height of the legs (legs are double 2x4's) as the headboard was SO heavy, we needed it to be lowered to make it more sturdy.

Because our mountain home is covered in a honey-tone pine, I opted to use "Special Walnut" stain for the finish. LOVE it! It gave the wood the rustic, deeper look I was going for. :)

We kept the foot board simple. Adding the barn door planking would have been weird, to me, when the piece was so much shorter.

Adding side and center support rails to the bed frame.

We purchased surface mounted keyhole bed rail brackets (Amazon) for $15 for four. They worked great!

With the aid of two other men, the hubster hauled this puppy upstairs to the master. This photo shows the bed assembled, minus the mattress.

We now have a bed that will stand the test of time. I am in love.
