Quick question: My father's washing machine will run through nearly the whole cycle but not drain.

I'm wondering if this is a common, minor problem or something more serious. Any easy fixes out there?

  • Sounds as though either the pump has failed, or the controlling circuit in the timer has failed. I am sorry to say that there is no easy fix to this as it can be all sorts of issues that caused this malfunction. It can be anyone of a dozen or so things that could have failed. It all depends on make, age and model if it pays to fix or just purchase another new machine.
  • No water is draining or just a partial drain? I have a machine that is now one year old. Takes high efficiency detergent. Used some of those h e sheets that you just toss in and it it laundry soap, dryer sheet and fabric softener all in one. Turned out that the sheet got between the tub and the rim and slipped into the drain system to partially block the drain. Take a look at your machine instructions, see if there is an access to your drain system inside the machine and be sure it is not plugged. If not plugged, then you have to go to plan B.... • Kevin has a good point, Some of the newer machines have removable clean outs that can be opened to remove old pennies and debris that can break up the cheap plastic pumps they now use. Perhaps your machine has one?

Thanks for all the responses! I'll have to give him a call to look into all of this, or check it myself when I'm up there this week.
