We have a horse farm where we board horses and my daughter owns 7 horses herself. Depending on the age of the horse owner and your DIY abilities, the list of possibilities could be endless. The first thing that came to my mind is horse treats. They are expensive when you buy them ready-made in the tack and feed stores. You probably have many of the things you'll need to make them already in your kitchen. Check out this link for several different recipes. http://www.thehorse.com/articles/33084/horse-approved-homemade-treat-recipes The first recipe calls for beer, which you might think is odd, but horses actually love beer. My daughter has a pony that has trouble sweating in the summer and she often gives her a beer a day to help her sweat. The "grain" that the first recipe calls for is sold in the feed store so rather than buy a 50 lb bag, you could ask you horse owning friend to give you some, or substitute with something else like rolled oats. Here are a couple pictures of ideas I've pinned but if you search "DIY horse gifts" on the internet or Pinterest, there are many other ideas you could tailor to your budget, the materials you have access to, and the age of the horse owner etc.

I checked out Pinterest just inputting Horse Ideas and came up with 1) homemade horse toys, 2) several homemade horse treats, 3) a bracelet using miniaturized horse shoe beads. My own family years ago had 2 horses and we frequently made braided halters or leads. Also if you're a sewer you could possibly make a special horse blanket. I'd definitely recommend checking out Pinterest for the inspiration.

Also just found on Pinterest a horse head wreath with instructions on how to make. And there's some pretty painted horseshoes quite a way down. Hope these ideas help.

Cowgirl or cowboy boot stocking! :o)

@Cricket Good suggestion *IF* the horse owner rides western. However, not all horse people ride western and/or wear cowboy boots. The English style riders, hunter/jumper riders, dressage riders, cross country riders etc. wear tall boots, usually black. In many cases, those who ride those disciplines wouldn't be caught dead with anything "cowboy-ish." lol.

Horse head wreaths.. A Lady here on Hometalk posted one she had made, and I have made several from her design.. This you can personalize with ribbon, the general shape, bells, battery operated lights, just let your imagination go when you make one...

Here is the link to her post, Good Luck ! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/craft/wreaths/horse-head-christmas-wreath-9979346?all_comments=true Remember if you make this, use your imagination. There are several on her post that show the ones they made.. I added lights, and jingle bells... Hope this helps! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

How about something for the horse, you can make a wonderful bug repellent to deter flies and mosquitos to name a few using peppermint essential oil, put it in a pretty bottle and ouila!

You have just hit me where I live now. I've started doing a plastic canvas tissue box cover with horses, and of course, being here in Kentucky, I am using Thoroughbreds. I printed out some photos of my favorites, sized them to the size of the tissue box, put the plastic canvas over the photo, and took markers in the color I want to draw the photo on the P.C. I think I'll love the result, but won't know for a little while.
