How to take a pallet apart

first of all, let me tell you this is hard work! wear gloves, and use a hammer to get the boards off. You need strnght, but also you have to be careful in removing the nail, or the pallet will split. For more detailed pictures, follow the link.

The types of nails I find in pallets these days are a combination between a screw and a nail so it's very difficult to just pull them out without splitting the wood. Also, instead of just a couple of them spaced an inch or so apart, I will find up to 4 or 5 all within a few inches of one another. It's hard to punch out screw. :(

@Jennifer , that would be hard if screws are holding the wood together, unless the screws are not rusted and you can use a drill in reverse to get them out. I have personally never found pallets with screws, so I have no other advice beside the one above. Good luck

I find it so much easier using a sawzall. Yes you must watch your feet, bu it is easier and quicker, then use a punch to knock out the nail heads. unless you want to use the 2 x 4s in between?
