I know they can be scraped off....sanded....then primed and painted....as long as they are not from an older home....some older homes might have aspestos, so I would make sure of that first...then google removing popcorn ceilings....

It depends on your decor and what you want your ceiling to look like. Do you want to paint them? My Aunt replaced her ceilings with metal sheets that look like the tiles you would use as a back splash and it looks awesome. I'll see if I can get a photo for you if you are interested.

It's a little messy but worth the time and effort. Empty the room, cover the floors with drop cloths, using a spray bottle with warm water & fabric softener, spray a 3'x3' section letting it soak in then scrape off with a putty knife until the entire ceiling is done. You can bag the waste and inquire with you local waste management company regarding proper disposal. Once the ceiling is completely dry, you can lightly sand, prime and then paint. I like Ace Hardware's Royal High Hiding White in a Satin finish. Doing it yourself will save a lot of money and it will be personally rewarding when it's all done. Caution: If you're unsure of hazardous ceiling material, have it verified by a certified & licensed company. Good luck.

I plan to buy some simple white tiles from this outfit. http://library.decorativeceilingtiles.net/?utm_source=Campaign+Created+2015%2F11%2F06%2C+10%3A59+AM&utm_campaign=Ceiling+and+Wall+Ideas+-+30%25+off+on+best+selling+tile&utm_medium=email#.VlzUHtKrQts They provide a great video showing how to install them, which I know we could do. Our ceilings are high, which makes the white ones appealing, but if your ceilings are low, the result could be "cozier" than you might like.

Diana's answer is the same as mine. It's a nasty job but comes off very easily when moistened. Use a large flat blade of your choice and poof...all gone. Now to clean up the mess!

I will warn you (from experience) they are a lot harder to scrape if they have been painted over. But still not impossible to remove.

Use a medium sized, light-weight box about 3 or 4inches deep. Deeper if you choose. A box top works too. Cut a short slit in it, push the handle of your scraper down through the slot and scrape dampened gunk into the box, empty as needed. Spray and scrape sections. Not so much mess and you are able to take a breather when needed

Good idea Annie,I've done 2 rooms like Diana said, don't apply much pressure when scraping you could make little tears in the Sheetrock which I did in one room and had to paint with a textured paint, still allot better than pop-corn ,a contractor told me I could also just sand it down and repaint which I did in the dinning room using a flat sanding hand tool with a long Handel available at Lowes and hardware stores,I painted the ceiling with a reg. Semigloss paint and Love it!
