What can I do with my Grandmother's crocheted bed coverlet

She used to put a wine coloured sheet on her bed over normal sheets, then put the crocheted coverlet on top you could see the wine though the open pattern it looked lovely, but it has yellowed and I can't see doing that now. But I can't get rid of it. People don't use items like this anymore, any answers to help me? Thank you

@Janet Pizaro thank you, but this is one piece, a little bigger then a double bed, I loved how it used to look on her bed, but it just isn't able to fit in our decor.

The first thing I would do is see if I could get it back to its former glory - have a look at this post for cleaning ideas: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/clean/fabric/the-right-way-to-clean-vintage-linens-2856409 My other thoughts are to us it as a table cloth (also using a contrasting colour underneath) or to make bolster cushions with it. If you have a day bed, it would look lovely there. Have a look at this board for some other ideas: http://www.hometalk.com/b/1078018/doily-ideas

First get it clean again. Some people have already posted on here some info or links for how to achieve that. Then add a backing fabric to it. As it does not fit with your indoor décor what about using it outside for instance in a hammock as a nice cover up/blanket. Fold and put away safely when not in use. If you have one of those old fashioned hammocks it could fit that look very well. If it is too big for that, cut it down a little to throw size and use the excess to make a nice pillow cover. That's the hammock all sorted! If you don't have anywhere to string up a hammock, then purchase one of those metal frames. I have one and I always fall asleep in mine in the garden. It is extremely relaxing. Sometimes you want a light blanket to cover arms or feet to protect from the sun.

@Valerie I highly recommend getting one. With a pillow under your head and another behind the backs of your knees for comfort, a nice light blanket to ensure no sunburn - oh I could lie there all day if I have the time! My dog comes and sits under the hammock with me. I usually take magazines and a cup of tea with me but never get around to looking at the magazines as the garden is such a peaceful view on a nice day. It does lull you to sleep!

I have several yo-yo quilts that my mom started. She never backed them with anything so they are very fragile and beautiful. I hang them on quilt racks that have a hanging bar so they can be carefully folded and hung without being damaged. Perhaps this is a good solution for your Grandmother's crocheted coverlet?

I have a special piece of a chenille bedspread belonging to my grandmother (it was fragile and worn so saved what I could). I plan to place it in a shadow box with photos of her and my grandfather.
