We had an incident this morning where a houseguest was cleaning our oven (how kind) but poured water on the front panel where the knobs are for turning on the gas and oven. The gas turns on with a button (electric). Now when you press the button, it just kinda zaps you. Is the oven dead? Should we wait 24 hours?

Is it digital? Our GE over began shorting out when too much moisture from inside the oven (steam from roasting vegetables, etc) made its way into the circuit board area. I had to open up the front panel and let it air out for 48 hours before it worked again.

The stove is gas, the oven is electric, but not digital...

Water and electrons never make good bedfellows...Most gas ignition systems use a Piezo type ignitor...it may be that this is shorted to the "frame" of the range a few days of "dry weather" may bring it around. In the mean time your house guest can go get some take out Chinese for you.
  • Just let it dry as Jay said. You can rush things a bit by using a blow dryer set on low to warm it up. Should be ok after that. If you can remove the knobs that will help let some air into it. Also the top on some of the stoves will pop up along the edge allowing access to the burners and controls. This will also help you get to the water faster. Just be sure to unplug it before you open it up.
