Vintage Faux Bamboo Desk Gets a New Look!

This bamboo line from Thomasville was/is very popular. Original paint finish for this guy was the white laminate top with yellowy-green paint finish. Not so popular in this day and age! The desk was part of the entire bedroom set. I know a lot of fellow finishers have done the desk and the dresser. I picture these pieces in a sort of Miami Beach-Hollywood Regency sort of decor. Glossy. No shabby-chic chalk paint stuff for these guys!

This wasn't my exact desk because I forgot to get a good before picture! But it looked identical to this one! The worn condition of the paint, the drawers, everything. This other pic (below) is the only before shot I could find before I started painting.

Everything got a good sanding, but I didn't worry about taking off all of the paint. Just scuffed up and smooth enough for me to apply a good, oil based primer. I left the original laminate alone. It was in good shape.
I happened to have a mid century chair that I had redone years ago and thought it went perfectly w/the desk. I'm posting the desk for sale with a free chair!
I love using Ben Moore Adavance paint. It's great for furniture. Try to stay away from straight latex paint because it will remain tacky. Advance is an acrylic latex and will cure properly on wood. This color is a pale robins egg blue. The accent color is Rustoleum in Glossy Coral. It looks rather orange in the photo, but it's more of a coral shade.
When I redo my pieces, my signature 'thing' is to do the drawers in a contrasting color. I take a lot time to sand the wood, inside and out, and to seal and/or prime the wood. If the wood inside a drawer is in good shape, I will sand it and put on a top-coat. The pic below is another dresser (same pale blue color) that I did for a client. I did a gorgeous ocean-teal color for that one. I think doing the drawers gives it something extra.
This dresser (made by Stanley) was similar in style to my desk. I posted about this redo already.

I realize the mirror doesn't really go w/the desk, I merely staged the desk for the photo. Everything is for sale in the pic. I painted the mirror and maid the reclaimed wood Beach sign.
