Ann, I've done it both ways - put them in the ground as soon as its ready/warm, when I cut them, dry them and wait till Fall I forget I have them until its too late. They are forced anyways, so they will be off schedule.

I would put them in the ground as soon as it warms up a bit so 1) you don't forget them and 2) they can collect as much energy as possible from the green tops down into the bulb to store for their spring flowers. I remember someone planting 3,000 daffodiles for a wedding that bloomed a month too early. I spent an entire day folding over the foliage and tying into a bundle with fishing line in order to not have brown leaves showing for the wedding, without cutting the leaves to the ground. When you bundle them low to the ground they can vitrually disappear into the landscape and not be noticed without sacrificing the energy giving leaves for the sake of aesthetics.
