How to Make New Signs Look Old

I love old, rustic vintage looking home decor, but of course, I want it in my style! ha! So today I'd love to show you how I made some new signs for our entry way look old & rustic.
These new OLD signs were so easy to make!
First, I painted a board (this was just a 1x10 cut to the size I wanted) the color I wanted my words to be. Let dry.
Next, I applied the vinyl lettering for my sign. I found this design in the Silhouette online store & cut it out with my Silhouette. You can also order vinyl online. After my vinyl was in place I put a generous coat of Mod Podge right on top with a foam paint brush. Let dry. This layer of Mod Podge will "seal" the edges & prevent the paint from seeping underneath my stencil. It's an amazing trick!
Then I painted over my lettering with the color I wanted the back ground of my sign to be. In this case I painted it white. You'll remove the vinyl lettering leaving an almost perfect stencil behind. I told you this was an awesome trick! Really, is there anything better than clean stencil lines? ;)
Next, I used a hand sander to go over my entire board. I paid special attention to the edges & corners. In less than a minute my board was nice & distressed & OLD looking!
The last thing I did for this sign is add a vinyl Christmas & some red holly berries. All done! :)
Here is how my new OLD signs look in our entry way. Love it!
