Merry & Bright Christmas Door

This year for Christmas I wanted to take the time to add a little DIY project for my decor. When I was thinking about what I could use in my home I realized I wanted something for my front porch. So I did some digging around and finally remembered a set of old pantry doors that I had been given. And when I saw that one had a side that was green I knew it was perfect for my little DIY project! (You could recreate this process on any door, an old window, or a piece of wood!)
I started off with the green side of the door and lightly sanded to remove peeling paint. Lightly is the key word here, I wanted to keep the green paint!
Next I printed off a sign that read merry & bright from my computer. No special supplies here! On the back side of the paper I rubbed a layer of chalk. (If you like my merry & bright sign you can grab a copy for yourself over on my blog! Link below.)
Once the back side was covered in chalk I laid it down in the spot where I wanted the words to go and lightly taped it down with painters tape. Then, with a ball point pen, I traced over the design and letters.
After I finished I removed the paper to reveal the design on the door. My paint is a light color and so the white chalk does not show up very well in the image, but it was dark enough for me to see. You could try a different colored chalk on the back of your paper if the white is not dark enough for you.

Next I took black acrylic paint, and a fine tipped brush, and painted on the design.
Once I was finished painting I added a light coat of a sealer that is strong enough for outdoor use and allowed it to dry. Then it was ready for display on my front porch!
If you like the look make sure you head over to the blog post and download the merry and bright design and check out the supply list.

What surface would you paint this merry message onto? An old window? A piece of barn wood? So many options!
