Well, here we are, our first Christmas in Orlando. Had some relatives visit from New York. One asked: "Where is your Bird Feeder?" We don't have one!!!
Heard that Bird Beeders attract bugs and other critters.....What are the pros and cons of Bird Feeders down here in Florida? As always, many thanks.

Not sure what kind of "bugs" would be attracted to a "seed" feeder but around here ( in colorado) the birds that visit feeders are seed eaters...as most of the "bug eating" birds fly south to warmer places like Florida....as far as critters go we get an occasional squirrel . http://youtu.be/E_112E9JeXw

IN FAYETTEVILLE , GA. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY BUGS . I DON'T HAVE TROUBLE WITH SQUIRRELS SINCE I PURCHASED 2 FEEDERS THAT WON'T ALLOW THE SUIRRELS TO GET AT THE FOOD . THE OTHER FEEDERS HAVE A HOT POWDERED PEPPER MIXED WITH THE SEED THAT WON'T AFFECT BIRDS , BUT BOY DO THE SQUIRRELS STAY AWAY !

I'm sort of in the same boat as KMS. I can only really offer a Colorado perspective, but we have plenty of squirrels trying to eat our birdseed if we don't have a relatively critter-proof birdfeeder. I think that's the most important thing. Get it up high, and get one that squirrels can't easily jump onto.

  • Well we have bears to worry about so its not suggested at all to put out bird feeders in many areas of our state. Forget about the squirrels. I assume in Fla where you reside, this would not be an issue for you however. But be sure if there are squirrels in your area, and you will get them once a feeder is put in, that you use a hanging one that the critters cannot climb down upon.

Alex, I am over at the beach and put up a feeder a couple of months ago. While I am disappointed that it has not attracted more birds than it has, I certainly have not seen any increase in bugs or other critters. I bought a "Squirrel Buster Plus" by Brome and have it hanging by a 4-foot hook from a tree. Squirrels have tried to figure out how to get to it, but so far none has. I'm using 100 percent black oil sunflower seeds.

FOLKS ......I'VE FOUND OUT OVER THE YEARS THAT DEER AND SQUIRRELS HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON ......IF THEY ARE HUNGRY ENOUGH THEY WILL EAT ANYTHING ! FOR SQUIRRELS , I'VE TRIED GREASING THE SHEPERDS HOOKS [ IT WORKS ] , I PLACED THEM , WHAT I THOUGHT WAS FAR AWAY AND/OR UP ON A POST/TREE AND THEY CAN JUMP /SLIDE DOWN TO THE FEEDER . THEN , JUST THIS YEAR I'VE TRIED SQUIRREL PROOF FEEDERS ANDS A HOT PEPPER POTION AND THEY WORK . THE SQUIRRELS NOW JUST FEED OFF THE GROUND FROM WHAT THE BIRDS DROP .

  • I see you marked your question as "resolved," so I don't feel bad about asking - how did you like your first Orlando Christmas? I'm a NY transplant myself (from Syracuse area) and found it strange to be out in shorts on Christmas (was 82 degrees here Xmas Day). I've become more used to it over the almost 7 years we have been here, but it is still a bit strange.

We used to have several bird feeders @ our back yard and many problems that were: messy weeds to pull, critters, too many poos @ our deck, bird feeders areas and next door neighbors complained of too many poos @ their side yard. Squirrels destructed about everything. We got tired to bury dead song birds about every day due to loose cats. So no more bird feeders for us and we felt so much better with sanitary here and no more bird cemetery here. ;-).

Douglas: David: Vicki: Thanks for taking the time to respond. Dan: While this is our first Orlando Christmas, we've been coming down to Florida two or three times a year(from the Bronx), at different times of the year, since 1971, either to vacation or to visit relatives living in the state. This year's weather was a pleasant surprise. Last year it was cooler for sure. A few years ago, I remember it even being too cold to use the heated outside swiming pool at the hotel. One year, in fact, we came down and saw that the New York temperature was warmer. You are correct, it feels strange. But, guess I'll just have to "bite the bullet" and bear with it. Resolved......am waiting until Spring. Thanks.
