Leaving Calidium Bulbs in Ground during Winter

Just wondering if it's safe to assume that I can leave caladium bulbs in the ground during the winter if I've left tulip and daffodils with a return each year? I dug up all of the caladium bulbs and brought them inside last fall, but I would sure like to skip that step this fall if I can.

I cut down and put a heavy layer of pine straw over my banana plants and elephant ear plants in Middle Tennessee area and they do just fine. I do some times get the ocassional plant that has gotten too old that I have to cut out but it's a whole lot easier than digging the hundreds of plants that I have.

Daffodils and tulips not only like it cold in the winter, they need the chilling period to bloom in the spring. Caladiums, on the other hand, detest cold and wet conditions. I would not leave them in the ground where you are.

Caladiums need warmth dig and dry them, then put them in a old pair of pantyhose and store in a box. You can put them in a closet that is what I do and do not plant them until the ground is 70 degrees. They rot with any cold. HTH
