When a friend gave me an old fair Isle sweater, I couldn't wait to turn it's beautiful design into some cute and cozy holiday decorations!
I love making new Christmas decorations out of things I already have on hand. So when a friend gave me an old wool sweater, I knew I wanted to felt it and use the fabric to make some Christmas tree ornaments.
The process for felting a sweater in quite simple and just uses your home washing machine. You can find all the directions on my blog at http://hubpages.com/art/DIY-Craft-Tutorial-How-to-Turn-an-Old-Sweater-into-a-Christmas-Ornament
Once your sweater is felted and dry, the material can be cut and used like other fabric. This Fair Isle design lent itself to be used to make a little Christmas tree, but you can make ornaments of any shape or design, like a star shape, a Christmas ball, or any animal shape. I recommend using a shape that best coordinates with the design or decoration on your sweater.
You can add further decoration to your ornament by adding beads, buttons, and other trimmings! I decorated both the front and back of my ornament to add some extra sparkle. For more photos and all the directions, visit my blog at
