Tomato support

Last year our tomato plants got huge and they were way to big for the wire cages. Does anyone have a good idea for making something for super cheap?

@Alicia you can use bamboo stakes which are quite in expensive. Create a triangle around the plant - tie string or jute at varying heights and the plant will be supported by these strings. You can get varying lengths of bamboo stakes. They are usually available in most nurseries or garden centers. @Douglas Hunt may have more ideas for you.

I use concrete rebarb, the stuff contractors use. It is not easy to cut but has open spaces 4" x 4". It is 6' tall. I bought a roll over 15 years ago and it looks as good now as the day I bought it. Each cage is 3' wide and 6' high. I bend loose wire one time and it stays ion shape for many years in the future. During the winter I put my cages around trees to protect the bark from deer.

My grandfather built simple box frames from scrap lumber. they would last about four or five years before they needed some "fix'n"

We have been trying to find someone with scrap lumber in our area, haven't had any luck yet. We plant quite a few tomato plants each year so I'm looking to do this for the least amount of money as possible. Would be great to recycle at the same time.

@Alicia you might want to find some pallets for this project. I read recently on this site that somethimes they are listed for free on Craig's list. Otherwise look for a store that receives products delivered on pallets. Check with the store before taking. You can search out free pallets here and likely find the post. Could also see if anyone is replacing their wooden fence and pilfer the old wood. We kept ours from two years ago to do projects with.
