How to Turn a Dollar Store Tray Into an Adorable Christmas Decoration

I love making creative Christmas decorations every year with my kids. These decorations have to be easy and cheap so that I can keep doing them year after year (though they're finally getting old enough that the easy part is less of a need!). I like to peruse the Dollar Store for random items to spark my creativity and see what fun holiday decoration we can make out of them.
I love the dollar store trays. They come in several different shapes (I've found square, rectangular, and circular there). And because I have a huge button stash and always have spray paint and glue on hand, this project really only cost me the dollar for the tray. You can't get much cheaper than that!
First we spray painted the tray black, but you could even keep it silver if you wanted to. We went through the button stash, created a Christmasy design and then hot-glued the buttons in place.
The button tree has become one of our favorite decorations these past several years. I used the circular tray to make a different decorative tray--click on my blog link to see what I came up with!

Going to try this with my 13yr old granddaughter. She's going through a hard time right now. Maybe this will help her see things through. Thank you for the inspiration.
