Help me choose a good steam iron

Question

I want to buy a new steam iron. I need your help to make a choice. As a girl, it  is very difficult to understand some technical moments and my questions are very simple and stupid sometimes. I read a lot of information about irons. I saw two useful reviews at the http://topchoice.best/ and http://www.amazon.com/. I can't make my choice between Rowenta DW5080 and Tefal FV4495 . I like their safety features. Those models have different temperature settings, power, soleplate material and price. I really tried to understand what technical specifications of the irons are the best for everyday home use. I read a lot of information about the importance of the iron's power and temperature settings. But I can't make my choice between two models. Help me do it please. What model of the iron do you have? What can you say about those models?

I prefer Teflon coated bottoms. I purchased a Rowenta some time ago and it leaks water something fierce. I will not purchase another one.

I also prefer a Teflon bottom on a steam iron. My recommendation for whatever iron you choose is to use distiller water and not tap water for the steam

It really depends on how you are going to use the iron.I have 3 Rowenta irons. One with a detached tank for big jobs. A regular hand held for steaming small batches and one that leaks because I dropped it that I use for dry ironing ie quilting. I have an inexpensive Black & Decker light weight that I take when I travel and don't have to worry about losing it or leaving it behind. Hope this helps you .

Rowena - definitely.  (But make sure it is one made in Germany). I have kept  one of these for 15years - working on about 6 years on my second one.  Perfect ironing too.

Black & Decker have made good irons for less bucks fo r quite awhile. I bought on 20 years ago and when it came time for a new one I again purchased B & D. It has great steam and surge.

whatever you decide,do not buy one without the protective bottom plate...I bought a B&D which proudly stated it was not Teflon...every time I use it I go through the ropes of having to clean it. I realize it is because sometimes the temperature is too hot causing it to scorch and clog up the bottom, but often you do not know what is in the fabric to be ironed. Never again! Can;t wait to get a new one and this time it will definitely be Teflon plate!

I had 2 Rowenta's and I really enjoyed all the wonderful features each one had. 2 Years ago I found the Oliso iTouch. It's fabulous!! The iron lays flat on the board and sits on two little feet. As the iron is touched the feet recess and it lays flat on the board. Every time you iron and let go and the feet pop out. This means you don't have to stand the iron up, which saves time and your energy. It's very convenient to just slide the iron aside rather than always lifting it up to stand. The steam ports are from the tip to the soul in all the necessary places to steam iron properly. Besides the tips and sides the holes go down the middle. Great from a small project to tailoring. The steam surge is great for all types of ironing. Look at the plate if the iron has just a few holes for steam then the quality is poor. If you find holes through out the plate and there is a lot, then it's a quality piece. I, too, would not recommend a Teflon plated iron. Good Luck!

We have had a Rowena for several years, I bought it for my wife as a gift. She would not spend the money to purchase it saying it's only an iron, I can get two for what it costs. I noticed she looked at it every time we went shopping, so I asked my daughter about the iron, which she had purchased a couple of years before. She said get it for mom, she will never buy one for herself. I did buy it for her and she loves it, tells all her friends about it, and said she was not bright for waiting so long,and it was not 'just an iron!'

Rowena, I have used 2 over the years, age 73 now!   Buy the professional iron.  Forget about price.  A heavy iron makes leaves a nice smooth finish.  Look for the number of jet holes on the bottom.  Enjoy!

My iron only uses tap water. Use whatever kind of water your manufacturer recommends .

Black & Decker can be used as a steamer for removing difficult wrinkles on curtains or clothes on a hanger without the ironing board if you use a vertical steam mode. It also has a motion-sensitive 3-way auto off technology which makes an audible alert when shutting down.
