Building this Fire Pit Patio was the best thing we've done in the yard. We really get so much enjoyment from it. We've since replaced the actual outdoor fireplace and added a couple more chairs. Easy to do if you don't mind a little exercise! Well worth the work.

Garden pavers and some pea stone. Hose it all down after a night of wood burning fun. http://www.recapturedcharm.com/2010/06/fire-pit-patio.html
Last year we added a couple more chairs and a new fireplace. http://www.recapturedcharm.com/2010/06/fire-pit-patio.html
Cut a circle the size you want your patio and remove all grass and dirt to about 6 inches down minimum http://www.recapturedcharm.com/2010/06/fire-pit-patio.ht
After the circle is cut and the grass/soil removed, we laid down some landscapers cloth. The cloth was then covered in limestone screening.
An edging stone was used to keep everything contained at grass level. Plastic edging at garden area. Fill in with more screening. Tamper the limestone down, water tamper again. Best to let sit a couple of days
Arrange your pavers leaving space for pea stone.
Fill with pea stone. Landscape around the patio

If I'm building up the ground level to an existing higher level patio, how would i do this? Could I place the landscaping barrier on top of the existing grassy area? or would have to kill the grass first if not removing it?

Also, is it recommended that I build it up using wood, to achieve the desired height?

How many pavers did you use?
