The first idea that comes to mind is to choose different paints colors.Go on Behr.com just for color inspirations to get a visual of what you may like. Once that thought process is complete then research some furniture ideas, when choosing that keep in mind the colors you are choosing .The we go from there.

decorating is simple,,, its what makes you feel good when you come home,, a place to relax and enjoy-- kick back in.. are you a beachy type person, an outdoor person, computer techie type, or one who love to travel- week-ends or long term, you will want a place for all your "stuff" , Are you a total take-out for food or like to make it your self, type, if you are all take out,, don't stress about the kitchen, they have boxed sets with everything...? Ask yourself what do YOU WANT ! If you are not home much and rather outdoor, keep it simple, If you are done work and come home and not go out,, that's a bit different..start with paint, Are all your shirts the same color ?, If yes, that may be a color to use..for inspiration.. Color changes the mood,, grey, subtle tans, mellow shades are calming,, brights are active, busy, fun.. its harder to relax in bright colors,, once you have figured what type of "home" relaxing or active..then go to furniture basics,,,, place to lay down, relax watch tv :sofa, futon, or big plush pillows or a table or crate for lighting,, Don't be in a hurry,, It should and will evolve.. try to get things that serve dual purpose,,,, tv/entertainment stand, think extra storage,, sofa or futon-- overnight guest or buddy to crash, good place to start is thrift stores,,, and garage or tag sales..Don't stress I would paint ,,,, and I WOULD PAINT THE TRIM,,,,, if ok'd with mgmt.. it would brighten things up lots..clean and fresh is always better..

@Rafael I think Janet is right - start with painting the walls, choosing a some what neutral colour, too bright may clash with things you already have. I would also suggest painting out the doors - white or off white. Once you have that done you will have a more open mind as to what you want to do. Decorating is merely coordinating colours and structures. They don't have to be all the same style, mixing styles can add a lot of interest, just keep wood tones similar and colours that coordinate. Some wall art may help as well. If you have second-hand stores in your area - you can start there, other wise I would suggest visiting the sales and clearance areas of stores. I wish you luck and hope you post progress pics.

Hi! You might want to start by choosing your furniture style first, then pick out a paint color that is compatible with the furniture. It is easier and less expensive to repaint if you don't like a color than to change the furniture because it does not match the paint.

Love the color combination! My daughter chose a similar combo for her apartment. She just started by picking things she liked and then we went shopping for similar items. Once you have some ideas that you like, start making up what she calls an inspiration board and then choose a budget...the rest is the fun part...putting it all together

Okay, so you like the apple green and cream. Paint the doors and all the trim the cream color. They are in need of an updated, fresh and clean look. Be sure to clean them well first so the paint will stick, then prime, then paint. The table that sits by the doors to the balcony, could sit along the wall between the doors to the bedrooms. Also think about how much natural light you have when you go to buy something. Need lamps? Second hand stores are great for those. You can spray paint them in matching/coordinating colors, even if the styles are not the same. Keep things stowed; it's easier to keep your home clean, so buy dual purpose items, like ottomans that can hold dvd's. etc. Rugs are great for warming up your environment. Try arranging furniture perpendicular to the walls. Your place looks long and narrow, and placing furniture perpendicularly would define a given area as the living room, or dining space. Window treatments are another area you can use to add personality, or let them be understatement backdrops to art you can find most anywhere. A nice plant that you learn to care for will add something living and organic to your home. Most of all, take your time! I saw this quote awhile back: "Home wasn't built in a day". A nice play on words to remind us to take our time making a "place" into a "home"! Post pictures as you go along. Good luck!

Hello Rafael, Not knowing your financials, take a good look at the space, if can start with paint, I think you would do better with white or beige walls (to go with the floors) and a cool color for the doors (the green is good but would be better a lighter shade) the kitchen might look better a lighter/pale yellow or maybe a light brown. once you do color then you start with the decor (rugs and stuff).. Hey good bold colors if that is you (but remember the darker the color the smaller the place looks) :) best of luck Merry Christmas and Happy New Years with you new place. Sincerely Carmen

You might want to hang some pictures when you get through painting, Some affordable solutions I have found are buying pictures at second hand shops, clean them and if the need some paint on the frame tape up the glass and spray paint them. Second hand stores are great to find accent tables, curtains and décor. Just look them over good first.
  • Shelley Shelley on Dec 18, 2015
Start with white paint all over. That will give you a clean slate to work with. If you spend money buy good paint. It will make a world of difference! Next look at Hometalk or even Pinterest for additional ideas. Hit yard sales, second hand shops and Craig's List for other items. Use sheets for window coverings. You get an inexpensive rod and some clips and voila..curtains! Remember there is nothing wrong with going slow and making good choices. I decorate on a shoestring because I enjoy the challenge! : )

Rafael had a tough crowd on this! You should always decorate with the colors and pieces you love. Continue to gathers pictures or ideas if things you like and don't be afraid to ask a friend for their help. By all means, keep the green wall cover if that's what you like...who are we to criticize your color choice? Best luck to you!

Hey Rafeal, , I agree with Barbara S. with the aspect of decorating with the colors and pieces you love. If you are on a tight budget, then repurpose some of your collections you already own. Living in an apartment can present it's own challenges with the restrictions of alterations to the space.so"painting" the walls may not be an option. Having been a renter in the past I, personally, have used sheets not only as curtains, but as an alternative for a contrast painted wall. Best place to find cost efficient supplies like this would be at your local thrift store.. Curtain rods can be purchased there as well and the final cost of your creation will not only be easy on your wallet, but anyone you share your DIY story with will also be impressed. I am currently assisting my 20 yr old daughter decorate her apartment through "finds" at Goodwill and so far the results are having that WOW effect. It appears your space has a lot of potential so almost anything is possible. One word of advise is to select a theme or colors YOU enjoy. Instead of spending oodles of money on wall hangings, stylish magazines tend to have advertising pages that can easily be cropped and framed. Again, nice frames are also sold at Goodwill,at a fraction of what you would spend for a brand new one - even adding a coat of paint to a frame can produce another effect as well. The ideas you can create are endless.........good luck and post your finished look.

Hi, When you had your bedroom at home what was it like. or even better how did you want it. Now is your chance to have it exactly how you always wanted it. I would just paint it for now in your favourite colour if the walls are good. You can not go wrong with just painting then when you have settled in maybe you could try wallpapering a feature wall. I am still not very good at wallpapering. My edges were bad so I used to cover them with a matching border It has taken me years to get it right .Try and have fun though. Most people I know do not like decorating. Or you could even get your friends/ family and have a painting party. A pizza and a few drinks could be fun.
  • Joanna Joanna on Dec 19, 2015
Start by spray painting those dull looking doors then give everywhere a coat of paint your choice of colour you could buy some nice prints for the walls or paint your own .
  • Jonnie Hammon Jonnie Hammon on Dec 19, 2015
Start with one room, as with all projects, stick with it till you feel you are happy with it. Make any needed repairs, adjustments, or additions, to make it yours. Then you can paint, wallpaper, etc ... Go cheap, on furniture, as your first apartment will not be your forever home. Go with your favorite colors, and styles, then move on to the next room or area. Your taste will change over the years, so try to pick up well made pieces, that can change as well. Reuse, and repurpose, the better pieces, to fit in, even later when you decide to change things. Add plants(real ones) to keep the air clean, and add life to the apt., believe me, it does wonders, and ones like pothos or golden pothos, can live in just water. It is a vine-y plant and tacking string to your wall, will allow it to grow along the wall, or you can hang it high, and let the vines hang down. Air plants are good to, they live off air, with no care needed. Then kick back, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Begin by doing your homework, look at some man caves, or homey designs you l, like your shudder, balcony doors. A light sanding & you could paint them to look super cool! Get to a paint store, look at color schemes. My son likes, olive greens, with greyish greens. Then begin by visualizing what you'd like, to put & where.
  • Itsjustme Itsjustme on Dec 19, 2015
You could move the shelf against the wall and get colorful vases to put on top or bright colored bookends to place on them. Another idea is to spray paint the bookshelf for a pop of color. When I moved in I had plastic plants in odd colored pots and wanted them all to match so I used plaster of Paris to make them all a matching white. Often one large picture or painting will make the place look much nicer than several small ones and make the area seem larger. Good luck with decorating your apartment! It will be a fun and rewarding journey.
  • Carol Harris Carol Harris on Dec 19, 2015
I love the shutter doors, I would pain them and also the other doors too. I would probably go with a neutral color so they would match any of your other colors. The table by the balcony doors I would move to another area, but looks like your space has great potential, like the others said one room at a time. Good luck, it will be fun.

Hi! So you want to decorate your apartment. Awesome! To start, you should consider a few things: 1. Budget- How wide or tight is your budget? What are your priorities in terms of decor? Invest a bit more in your priority items, and build around that. 2. Timing- are you a person that moves around frequently, or are you planning to be there for the long haul? Make sure to get items that move well if you hop around a bit. 3. Effort Investment/Ability-- How much work are you willing to putting into decorating, embellishing, creating art pieces, etc.? Which DIY skills do you most excel in? What do you struggle with. For things that you're good at (painting, sewing, woodworking, etc., try to gear your projects towards those strengths. For skills that you struggle with, try practicing on smaller accessory items first before tackling something huge. You can also ask around to see if there are people who are good at those weak elements and ask for their help. Skill swap! 4. Space- How much space do you have? If you have a lot of space, try to fill it with more substantial pieces, and smaller items if you don't. Sometimes, it can't be helped, especially if you have a lot of hand-me downs. But the biggest thing is to try to make as many items do double duty as possible. And that double duty will likely need to be storage! A chest that doubles as a coffee table. A kitchen cart that stores appliances. A cutting board that covers your sink and can give you extra counterspace. Wall art that also holds keys, ties, whatever. 5. Style- are you into modern pieces, contemporary, classic, eclectic? If you can find pieces that fit into the aesthetic that you gravitate towards, that helps. But you can also get items that may not initially fit, and modify them to give you that look. Add molding or medallions to modern pieces to soften them. Take them off of traditional pieces to give them a contemporary edge. Contact paper, fabric, and paint may become your best friends! Wander around a craft store, a hardware store, or art supply shops and see what you find yourself drawn to, and get inspiration from it. Websites like Hometalk help too, of course! 6. Colors/Themes- what colors do you like? It's usually easier to start with a neutral base, and then build on it with colors that you love. As for themes, you can make that stand out with well-placed accessories. Rustic, farmhouse, industrial (omg Steampunk!), whatever you love! If you have a passion, weave that in too! Music instruments on display, sports memorabilia, framed anime posters (hehehe I have them everywhere), whatever. I know that was a long spiel, but I hope it helps a little! Coupled with the awesome comments made by the other posters, you may at least have a start! Good luck and happy decorating!

I LOVE your doors!!! I see you are in Cuba....here in the States those doors are GOLD!! If you are allowed, I would do some sanding on your base boards, try to fill any holes with wood filler, lightly sand, and paint!! Paint your walls. For a first time apartment, and for a young man, I think a nice "gray" color on your walls and and either white or even a much darker gray on the trim. I would keep the doors white/to off white,or even the darker gray??Get some small paint colors, (or swatches) that you like, and do a "test" patch on your walls, look at them at different times of the day, at nite, with lights on/off.....it will give you an idea of HOW it will look...then you can add your favorite color(s) as accents....throw pillows, rugs, colorful knick knacks, plants, books. You can paint your wood furniture pieces in your favorite colors too. Your table and chairs...you can give it a new look too. Recover the chairs, in your favorite color, it looks as if it is chrome legs?? you can repaint with spray paint?? Just be sure it is CLEAN AND LIGHTLY SAND...spray away!! See if you can find a mirror or two, they always "ADD" to any decor!! Lastly, get your sister, or girlfriend involved, all girls have ideas....just be "picky" about it!! LOL!! GOOD LUCK!!!! Be sure to let us know what you did!! AND HAVE FUN DOING IT!!!

If you are able to paint, that would be the first thing I'd do. A nice neutral, like gray or greige is a good base. Then layer with color-a few throw rugs, toss pillows, & maybe something on the walls-a few pictures, or even some colorful posters. Hit up thrift stores & flea markets-a great source for some projects. A little spray paint on an old lamp base makes it new again!
  • Johnchip Johnchip on Dec 19, 2015
I agree a grey color to the walls, it works well to make everything else pop out. In any thing you chose to have in color , always go a shade lighter, as too much rich color can overwhelm. As it is an apartment, keep your costs down, don't take on too big a task or buy to much to furnish it as you will be leaving it. Mirrors make spaces bigger and brighter but make sure they have nice frame or paint the frames.
  • Keller Keller on Dec 19, 2015
The very first thing I would suggest is that you give the apartment a thorough scrubbing. If you have a favorite color that you absolutely love, you might paint the walls with variations of that color OR paint the walls a more neutral color and use your favorite color variations and their complementary colors in the accessories you choose. It looks like a nice big space you have there. Have fun!
  • LindaK LindaK on Dec 19, 2015
Like others have stated, painting in a neutral is the first step. Then find a rug or fabric to use as inspiration in making furniture and décor choices. Have fun, you really scored on your apartment.

Hi -- Paint is your best friend when decorating on a budget. Buy a bunch of home decorating magazines...go through page by page and make notes of what you like, AND what you don't like. If you find a magazine where the decorating styles really speak to you, order a subscription (it will be much more economical than buying single issues), and each issue you receive will offer new inspiration. Interior design is an ongoing process and take your time before making an large investments. A bed, sofa and dining table/chairs are usually the first major purchases. Best of luck in this exciting process!
  • Pamela Pamela on Dec 19, 2015
You can look through magazines to help find your style. Start with one room and you'll get a feel for where you want to go from there. What area of the country do you live; beach, mountains, desert? That can help influence a style or theme. What are your hobbies? Do you want a bachelor pad, homey and quiet? I think it's great that you reached out and asked. Keep asking, you'll get there.
  • Kate Redlin Kate Redlin on Dec 19, 2015
What's your favorite color? Pick one thing you love that you already have. Chances are your favorite color is in/on it. Pick wall paint, couch, curtains, pillows, dishes, wall art, throws, etc, etc, etc in different shades of that color. I would avoid blue. It looks awful if you do it wrong. Have fun adding neutrals like white, beige, black or brown. You will be impressed with yourself. I guarantee it.

What I did was look at a million pictures of rooms until I saw one I wanted to live in. I took that inspiration room and recreated it APPROXIMATELY....an ap called Morpholio helps compare different items you find on line as well as keeps track of their location and cost. This helps you get a good idea of what works in the room so if you hit thrift (or other) stores, you will recognize one of your chosen elements. Or, just hit Ikea.

Pamela is right! Do a lot of research here on hometalk. Pin what you like. You could also google, "how to decorate an apartment," and get ideas (pin them too). Take your time to see what you really like. Go back through your "pins" several times to really see what you have chosen...ask yourself, do you LOVE it. Then, set aside all your ideas for a fews days, then go back through your pins...it will come to you.

Hi, Charmice and the others have most of the suggestions covered. It's close to Christmas, there's not even a week and just how much time do you have to put into this right now? Besides, what about the day after Christmas is done? You're just starting the wonderful world of what the heck do I want to do now? Wouldn't it be better to use all the designing ideas you been given to get what you want going during the year after the holidays when things slow down a little? So how about using easy things to dress it for Christmas this year like some wrapping paper and ribbons. Pick one color of ribbon, but lots of different widths, Red,Green or Blue what's your thing? Mine is Red. Get 1", 2" and 3" or 4" ribbon Four or five rolls of 3 or 4" for bows, lots of bows. Not fluffy, big and bold! If you have the time to fix the the shutter doors that would be great. It's a given, they are going to need your attention sooner than later and they are a focal point that can even be seen from your front door. But, I believe I would start by scrubbing those doors as clean as you can and then pick the widest ribbon you have and tie one big bow to the middle of each. Thread the ribbon through the blind and back to you and tie the bow just as if you were tying your shoelace. Only this shoe lace is about 5 feet off the ground and the ribbon is about 3" to 4" wide. Big bows! There, Christmas is honored and the doors are almost ready to be painted however you decide after Christmas. The little tree you have on the small table. Is that your Christmas Tree? Does it plug in? Then take a 2' x 2' piece of one of the wrapping papers you have and crumple it up as if you were going to throw it away and then open it some - carefully - and lie it on top of your frig. Place that first and most special little tree on the the frig in the middle of the paper and sort of squeeze the already crumpled paper up around the base so that it will help keep that little fella safe and standing. Plug it in! Not a plug on the tree, Buy 4 Christmas Towels. Use 1 towel as a place to stand the little guy in the center of your kitchen table and another towel to use to dry your dishes. If you let your dishes dry themselves like I do, use the towel as a kitchen hand towel. Hang the towel thru the frig door handle or any drawer handle. It's practical and it's Christmas! The other 2 are hand towels for the bathroom. Wash all the other doors in the house to make them brighter, include the rest of the trim if you have time. It'll also be brighter and cheerier after Christmas and almost ready to paint too. You can cut sheets of wrapping paper to fit each panel of the bedroom doors and tape them into each panel if you like (remember to leave the paper about 2" longer and wider so that you can fold an inch over on all 4 edges so that when you fit it into the panels on the door the edges will be finished). Now that I've written that all out, toooo much work!! Do it for your front door though and tie a one" or two" wide bows around the door knobs nice and floppy for the bedrooms etc. Ok, livingroom. This year you have three big red bows and a place where the little end table is now. Is there room to use that little table by the couche as an end table? Now, shopping list. Craft store and grab a salesperson. Act really lost and they will help you with this whole list! Craft people are the best. #1 Several rolls of one color ribbon. About 3 rolls of 1'', 2" or 3 rolls of 2" and 5 rolls 4''. #2 Two different wrapping papers, one can be for decorating and the other for gifts. #3 A roll of packing tape if you don't have any at home. Scotch tape and two hooks that you can take down without hurting the walls. The salesperson will know what they are. #4 Four Christmas dish towels. #5 Ask the salesperson if you could have a box about 3 feet tall by 15" or 18'' around to wrap a present in.They are always glad to help. If it's given to you flattened out, you'll need to get packing tape. ( Bigger and stronger than scotch tape.) #6 Also ask to see all the fake flowers and greenery that are on sale now. Make a tall bouquet to stand in the box. After you put the box back together with all sides secured stand it on one of the 15" or 18" ends and cut a hole about a six inch diameter in the top end of the box. Gift wrap the box and stand it up so the hole is at the top. Arrange your flowers and put them in the hole at the top of the box. Almost a tree!! You don't want to push the flowers too far in as then the "tree" will look shorter. In order for this to work you will need to secure the box so that it won't fall over. I have used ribbon and two of the wall hooks that do not harm the wall. Place the hooks on the wall each side of the bouquet and string 1" or 2'' ribbon from one hook, around the front of the box just above the box where the bouquet starts out of the top of the box and secure to the second hook with bows of course. For this year use your budget wisely, buy some smaller christmas balls and perhaps a string of lights if you have an outlet to use in that spot. There's your tree!! Out of all the things you purchased, the majority can be packed in that box and stored away for next year. Then you will have the opportunity to choose whether to reuse or donate. Take a breath and have a healthy, happy Holiday in your new digs!

Rafael, you didn't tell us if you own or rent your very cool-looking new home. This will determine how permanent your decorating improvements can be. A landlord may have restrictions on what you can do with the walls, floor, etc. It looks to me like your new place has a lot of potential, though. It's going to take time transforming your space, but it can be very enjoyable. I wish you well.

Hello single guy. I would start by painting all the doors and trim white. They'll look fresh and clean. Then you can decide on a colour to paint the walls. Personally I would paint the bedrooms a different colour from your kitchen/living room area. An area carpet in your seating area would break up the expanse of floor tile. Place fridge in front of the unsightly wall socket .Overhead lighting is harsh so look for lamps to soften the ambiance in your apartment. The small wood table could be placed beside your chair. Move the larger wooden piece ( in front of the door) to the place where you presently have the side table. It's a large wall and would accommodate the higher table nicely. When you do get around t hanging pictures try groupings rather than singles because you have so much wall space. Think resale shops when you consider buying more items to furnish your apartment. You'll find some real treasures at reasonable prices. Take your time and enjoy the decorating experience and you'll be pleased with the result and yourself.

Since you've got the main painting done...stay with those colors, just pick up lighter or darker colors of the same tone to accent. Instead of a huge wall hanging you could always go with taping off the big walls and paint a huge square on the walls with different shades of green that combine with the color apple green((leaving the center the same color as the walls..... A area rug in the living room to match the colors would look nice too, be comfy and add color even if a solid color................................................................ Take a sample of the green paint with you when you're looking for matching items....... .............;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; ...........................................................................You can even uses bed sheets to hang with curtain squeeze hooks or slide rods on bedroom windows, same as your bedding to match thing well....... with bedding just buy extry sheets((be sure to measure you windows first to see if you need twin, queen or full size and buy flat ones not fitted....for the windows)). It's an easy cheep way((if you're on a budget or not)) to keep everything to match. ......................................................................................................................................... Could also frame fabric((striped or plaid in green apple tone colors)) with a quarter inch molding to put on walls. small tacks or nails will hold it ...love the high ceilings. Just remember to take the paint swat with you when shopping......Good luck and enjoy your new place. Remember same colors in kitchen with dishes and small appliances, make everything look like it belongs

The least expensive, and most effective decorating tool is paint. Freshen up the woodwork with a satin bright white and any color you use will look good with the contrast. Get some colorful scatter rugs and runners that match your walls and put them down in your traffic areas. Pick up the colors from the rugs and make accents for the walls (read the Hometalk site for suggestions to DIY). Frame photos of family and friends in all black or all white frames and arrange them in the hallway. Haunt garage sales, thrift stores, consignment stores, etc., for steals on side tables, cabinets, storage and so on. A little sanding and stain or paint will make everything look chic. For a bachelor pad, try to find a large comfy sofa that you can nap or snuggle on -- keep it in a neutral color and use some pillows and throws for comfort and color. I wish you well in your decorating endeavors.

Check at Sherwin Williams and ask to see their ooops paint. You can get some wonderful paints for very cheap. A nice khaki or gray color for the walls and a nice white for the trim and you will be great. Then shop for rugs. Thrift stores have cheap mirrors and lamps. Make it your own. :)

After painting, (do ask the landlord first!) then hit the thrift stores. They have wonderful accessories for cheap, and the hunt is half the fun. You can get lamps (test them before buying), vases, wall "art", etc. Inexpensive framed posters featuring things or places you like, also look great on the walls. You might look for indoor/outdoor rugs in a 5' x 7' size. These hold up well, and usually cost less. Place one in front of your couch to anchor it, add a coffee table and some comfortable chairs. Try to stay in a neutral color range for the big stuff, and add accessories in a different color for contrast. Look for a framed mirror for over your couch. It will add depth to the space and reflect light. Good luck!

First of all you need to give everything a good cleaning. I don't know if it's the photos, but everything looks a bit dingy. Then, as everyone has said, PAINT!! And it's so important to do the woodwork, floor molding and door moldings, white. Decide what color you want to live with and ask the landlord if you can paint. If so go ahead and paint. This will make all the difference. From there on it depends on how much effort you want to put into it. I've had a lot of people ask me how to decorate and I always recommend they put together a book of everything they see in magazines, etc that they would like to have in their home, furniture, lamps, side tables, art, everything. As you go along you will develop a sense of what decorating is. There is a science to putting rooms together, but it is so important that you have what you like/love around you. The rest will work itself out. Have fun!

Chose a rug, picture, or piece of fabric that has the colors you would like to use in your apt. Pick paint colors that complement your choice(s). I agree with Martinigal, find pictures of what you like as a guide. If you find a picture of a room that has everything you like, buy pieces that look the same, at the best price possible, to duplicate what is in the picture. The items only need to resemble what the picture shows, not match exactly. Try to duplicate ss much of the room as you can to get the results you want. Do not go into debt with your decorating...never. Also, go slow...you do not have a time limit. Good luck.

You did not say what your budget or time line was. Once you pick your paint color I would get one good quality piece of furniture like a leather sofa. After that I would work towards adding more quality furniture as you can afford it. Dinning set, bed, dressers, As you move to a nicer apartment or home you will not want to move cheap junk furniture with you. Good Luck

I agree with Debbie. Check online (Hayneedle, Overstock.com, Joss and Main), or go to your favorite store (home furnishings: Penneys, Macy's, etc, Ikea) and find a rug, a piece of art or an upholstered chair that is appealing to you. Choose a base color (small spaces tend to favor neutrals like green. blue, brown). This will be your inspiration piece and if the art or rug has multiple colors, you automatically know what will coordinate well with your 'base color'. Walls can be painted a darker or lighter version as can the coordinating accent colors. Check out Pinterest for 'home decor' and find a style that suits you, it might be very traditional or quite contemporary, rustic, industrial. Whatever suits your fancy. Your anchor piece in the living room will be the sofa, so make it a quality piece of furniture. For the dining/kitchen it will probably be the table/chairs and the bedroom the quilt/coverlet or bedspread will tie the space together if you keep the colors compatible. I'd keep the wood trim white or very light off white, same with ceilings to provide visual lift for the eye. A focal point in the living room can be a piece of art that echo's the colors you have chosen in your inspiration piece. Home decor isn't an instant fix, it takes time and exposure to decide what you like, what works well together. Fix your budget first and then work in small steps. Print out a living room you like, post it on your bathroom mirror and work gradually to incorporate things you like, as budget permits, into your own. don't be afraid to experiment, but do the experimentation with small budget friendly items like wall clocks and small accent pieces, not major purchases (like the sofa!). Good luck!

First thing to do is paint. If you are on a limited budget, go to Craig's list, estate or garage sales or salvation army and thrift shops for your furnishings. It would probably help to start with one main piece of furniture or picture and pick colors that go with it. Come back here if you get stuck on any of it or need opinions. We are full of them. Good luck!
  • Barb Barb on Dec 20, 2015
Also you might want to look through magazines or home decor websites to get an idea of the style you like and what colors you like together.

Here's my 2 cents...Good cleaning of each room. Clean the ceiling, walls & floors. My suggestion is to keep the wall colors neutral but a light color. Your space is small & narrow so a lighter color will make it seem larger than it is.Here are some of my suggestions for color...Coastal Pleasure 5048 by AceHardware.com, Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue, Sherwin Williams Sleepy Blue SW 6225 Then I would paint your ceiling, doors & trim a bright white. Looking at the room facing the shutters...On the left side I would get a comfy couch, but I would make sure that it is a dorm or apartment size. Meaning you want to keep the width & height of couch smaller than a full size. Opposite the couch I would make a wall of industrial pipe & wood bookshelves. Take a look at the following link http://wellgroomedhome.com/2014/02/industrial-pipe-bookcase.html You can customize the bookshelves any way you want. Take advantage of the height of the walls by going up. Place the TV in the middle w/ electronics underneath & then bookshelves on either side. Instead of a coffee table I would get 2 side tables for each end of the couch. For extra seating for guests I would get 2-3 brightly colored cubed ottomans w/ storage inside. Looking at the room facing the fridge...Can't see what you have for a kitchen but 1st thing I would is move the fridge so it's almost to the end of the short wall towards the hallway. In that space I would get a closed tall 5 shelf wooden bookcase to make for your pantry/slash storage for pots/pans etc. You can paint it in a funky color to make it pop off the walls. I would change out the card table & chairs w/ a real square table & chairs. Then lastly I would add some table or floor lamps for each room. Hope this helps.

It looks as if the doors and baseboards weren't painted. Not to be hurtful, but for me personally, it makes the space look shabby. I like your choice of soft green - very relaxing and cooling for a relatively warm climate. I personally like colour so I would look for colourful pics for the walls. Mirrors are great for expanding your space depending on where you hang them. Another source are weeds that you can put in a large jub to soften corners. There are lots of free things like this you can use to make your home cozy.

First I would place an appropriate size of potted palm in the corner by the door to the balcony where that one stand is right now ... because the space is narrow i would go to Amazon . com or just do a search online for wall stickers , and they make them in Spanish , I know because i checked ... they stick right to the wall are re-positional and removable ... and they come in sayings and images and some companies even make sports themed ones .... those would brighten up the walls with out making the space feel even more narrow ... plus they make ones for almost every budget .... fabric wall hangings can do the same kind of thing . also i would put some kind of rug or floor mat in the living room to help define the living room space from the dining room space . Good luck and I hope to see some photos of after ... happy Christmas

Ok didn't realize that the walls have already been painted. I would paint the ceiling & the shutters a bright white. I would paint the doors & trim 2-3 shades darker green in the same palette as the walls.
  • Rustic Owl Treasures Rustic Owl Treasures on Dec 26, 2015
I would defiantly paint the doors the cream color, adding a rug would do wonders for the living room part, i would also move that bigger table in the corner by the door where the smaller one is(if you get a tv id sit on that or hang it on the wall) id also add art on the walls.
  • Buster Evans Buster Evans on Jan 02, 2016
Paint the doors and trim.. you'll be suprised what a difference that will make... I would put the kitchen table against the wall it can be pulled out when you have guest. Swap places with the two tables, the big one will work better centered the wall. Pictures on the wall or some sort of decoration at least... just use your imagination and make it yours!
  • Mike Mike on Jan 02, 2016
Walls are good. Do woodwork and doors in an off slightly warm white ut no yellow tones which could make flooring appear dingy. You might also brighten it with a decorative area and/or entrance/area rug. Consider painting your mall tables to Mach and use them as a place for lamps and placing a beverage or snack as you watch tv. It's hard to suggest more, not knowing more about your things.

I am with Buster "Paint the doors and trim". It will make the place look brighter. Rugs are a good choice for a decorating start. Also, if you have tile floors, you may ant to consider redoing the grout lines. Look at magazines, if you see something you like, tear the pages to start a folder of ideas to make it easier to buy things that appeal to you. Good luck.
