I won't be able to help but will lend encouragement. I have seen these and wanted to try one, how to go about it? I am by no means an artist but with a small nail in the center and a pencil tied to a string is how I would start. Divide my four directions, measure out and then come back at angles for the point. As far as the pretty add on stuff I would just search the web for ideas.

try www.grahpicsfairy.com and search for compass, karen is on HT, so she may be able to provide more specific links for you. Once you print out an image you choose you could get it enlarged at a copy place. I would embellish or paint it however you like and then consider decopauging it on the ceiling

Find a opaque Projector, borrow from school or business office that might have one... Old School... Put the picture of the "compass" on projector, and you can size it on the ceiling. Size, center, it where you want it. then 'trace over lines' Use a ruler to get straight lines. Once the lines are drawn, painting is all you have left! :-) This is how I do murals on a wall.

Another way of doing it would be, to project it onto a piece of 1/4" board. Masonite would be my wood of choice... then jig-saw it out and nail or bolt the masonite onto the ceiling. that way when you grow tired of it, you can remove it by taking it down... (best to use screws instead of nails)
