What chairs will match our new table or can I use the ones thatI have?

Beth
by Beth
We just got our new dark, walnut colored dining table which we selected because the angles match the slanted roof, windows and fireplace in our re-modeled open floor plan house. I have 6 recycled '50's school chairs that I got a great deal on but now that I see them with the table I think that they're much too round looking. I had planned to stain or paint the chairs to update them a bit but they would still be round. Or, I could buy new ones but I have no idea what would work with this narrow legged table. Any Ideas on what type of chair would go well with this narrow legged table or how I can make my school chairs work? They don't have to match the wood, it's more the style of chair that I'm concerned about.
New table, a dark walnut with the chairs on the right that I had hoped to use.

Beth I love the table and the chairs, too! To compliment the lines of the table, I would suggest chairs with clean, straight lines. Maybe a black painted chair with an upholstered back and seat or cushion? If you like an eclectic look, choose two pairs chairs with similar lines and use coordinating fabrics to pull it all together. And save those school chairs...they're amazing too!

Believe it or not, Target has some pretty nice side chairs online. They are sturdy and easy to assemble and sometimes they can be purchased in pairs for a pretty reasonable price. Let me find a picture of what I was thinking of.

Would something like this work in your space, Beth? Lots of colors and patterns depending on your taste and style
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@MN Mom Thank you for taking the time to look those up!. I do think that style would work well and will check out Target. Being the evervigilant bargain hunter that I am though, I bought a living room chair with a downrightugly pattern and it’s close to the table so I would have to get a solid colorfabric for the dining chairs. I got theliving room chair at a great price because someone had it custom upholstered then decidedthey didn't like the fabric either. But,it matched the gray sofa and I had always promised my husband a swivel chair sohe could look out on the mountains so I’m stuck with it.

I love the chairs you intended to use with your new table.

@York Gardener I think that's some great advice. We don't spend a lot of time around the table, usually just for meals so they may just end up working after all. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well! And thank you so much for your attention to my questions.
  • Paularuth Paularuth on Dec 24, 2015
If you paint the chairs walnut or some darker wood color and add comfortable-looking cushions, you would have a nice looking set. I love the Target chairs suggested, too.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@Paularuth I was hoping some paint would help too since I would rather not have the expense of new chairs. I saw the same chairs for sale painted a bright shiny red all over which looked nice but still round. There is a gray sofa across the room and the gray stone fireplace next to the table so I thought if anything, a shiny gray might work. It's next to a quartz counter top with browns and grays. I could make some squarish cushions (or triangular!) that might help tie it in more with the shape of the table. Sound like lots of extra work though so I will check out Target first. Thanks!

Like your current chairs. Both table and current chairs look contemporary. I like the juxtaposition of angle and curve, dark and light.

I think the chairs on the left are perfect. The fabric looks great through the glass and the wood is so similar it looks good. The straight lines of the wood match too. They look comfortable and inviting too like lingering for coffee and conversation after lunch or dinner?
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@Nana moving on Thank you, I loved those chairs too on the left too and they do match well but they're much too big for the table and the space. We were only using them temporarily with a smaller round table and even then they were too big for the space. I might be able to use them somewhere else.
  • Nana moving on Nana moving on on Dec 24, 2015
I would go over the solid black table base with the same dark brown as the chairs on the left like a wood grain texture lines over the black.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@Nana moving on Thank you. Something with paint like that might work for the chairs on the right but the table is actually not black nor as dark as it looks in the picture. It's brand new and was above my usual budget with a hand rubbed dark walnut finish. I don't dare touch it, it's a very beautiful finish that just about matches the finish on the chairs to the left but they're much too big for the table and the space. We were only using the chairs on the left temporarily with a much smaller round table.

Personally, I like the rounded chairs with the table. I would just stain or paint the round chairs (darker), and live with them for a while. You may find that you will appreciate a break from the angles, and you won't have a ''cookie cutter'' look. The colour will make a huge difference and help the coordinate better with your table. The Target ones (and the like from big box stores) are cute and very common, but don't hold hold up to wear and tear...they become uncomfortable very quickly. Impulse buys end up costing more in the long run. I would also put the upholstered chairs elsewhere, since I think the 2 styles together are the problem, not the table. If you do a search, you will see that many people put round chairs with rectangular tables (and vice versa), and it looks good. Here is a site that shows some: https://www.allmodern.com/Dining-Sets-C366119.html

Thanks, I sure hope so. I must admit though, they are a tad uncomfortable compared to those upholstered chairs we had been using.

These chairs will work well with your new table, they just need a some updating. I would spray paint the legs the same color or similar color as the dining room table base is, and then I would add lots of color and or design to the chair seat back, for you have a lot of dark wood in the room already.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@LD Thank you! I should mention that the photo is making everything look darker, the floor is not as dark as it looks and and the table is a hand rubbed dark walnut stain, not black as it looks. None of the other furniture in the open floor plan is wood. I like the idea of spray painting the legs because the counter stools I want to buy for just behind the table are painted a dark brown and I was going to re-cover the counter stool seats with a lighter fabric to break things up a bit.

Personally I like the contrast of the round chairs and the square table. It is very contempory and works very well. I would however stain them darker to match the color of the table. Nice finds.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@Janet Pizaro Thank you! I was going for mid century modern and went out on a limb to buy the table. It's a lovely hand rubbed dark walnut stain but I got the chairs for a steal. I think I'll live with it for a bit and see if I can get used to it. The color of the chairs actually do tie in with an upholstered chair I have in the open floor plan but I still think the contrast is a bit too stark and would probably want to stain or pain them.
  • Dawn Luthe Dawn Luthe on Dec 24, 2015
I like the juxtaposition of the round chairs with the angular table. I would move the other chairs elsewhere. I don't mind the color and would live with them that way for awhile.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@Dawn Luthe Oh yes, those other chairs were just pushed out of the way for the picture. They're much too big to use or mix with the others, we had been using them temporarily with a much smaller table until the new one came. Thank you!

DO NOT TOUCH THOSE CHAIRS! They are perfect as they are! If you want to wash they with Murphy's Wood Oil soap and wax them, fine...please do not "mess" with them. Do not paint the legs...do not do anything to them. PLEASE... The contrast of the light and dark woods is very nice and not goring...If one of my clients had these pieces, I would tell them the same thing...
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@Jim L Wow, I am so pleased to hear that as the chairs are originals and in great shape. The table is a beautiful hand rubbed dark walnut and I didn't mind the difference between the dark and light wood as much as I do difference between the shapes of the table and chairs.

this is a great look. only thing i would change is to paint the legs of the chair black to match the table. it really looks like a set.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 24, 2015
@Juliya Sav The table is actually a lovely dark walnut finish and is much lighter than it looks in the picture. If it was black, I think the chair legs would look great painted to match. I'm glad that you like the look so I think I'll try to live with it for a while. Thank you!

I like the chairs with the table they just need some color. Use some of the Unicorn Spit stain to spruce up the chairs & you'll be set!
    • Beth Beth on Dec 26, 2015
@Sherry Fram Thank you, I wasn't sure what the Unicorn Spit stain was but just watched a video on it. Very interesting technique!
  • Jim L Jim L on Dec 24, 2015
The sharp (acute) angles of the table base are quite "stark". The "roundness" and curves of the chairs soften the look. They really do compliment each other. The chairs are so '50's...Had the chairs been "angular", that would have been to much...it is like mixing patterns...floral with stripes...angles with curves...I think that you have "hit a home run" and you didn't know it! Enjoy them...Look on the bottom of the chairs and see if they are by Herman Miller...if so, they are worth a fortune as they are. Mess with them and they are almost worthless...I would really like to be able to score some chairs like these for some of my clients...
    • Beth Beth on Dec 26, 2015
@Jim L I don't think I want to change the color of the chairs as they are genuine '50s and I'm somewhat of a purest. The house was just re-built so we're not living in it yet, I'll check for a name on the chairs this weekend. Thanks!
  • Judith Miller Judith Miller on Dec 24, 2015
I agree, these chairs are perfect. I would probably darken the chair legs but that is just how I like it. I understand the purists who say don't change them. I tend to fix things the way I like them not to retain value. I painted my Hoosier cabinet and my antique loving friend almost cries every time she sees it.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 26, 2015
@Judith Miller Well, overall most folks have said they like them but my family still can't stand them. I admire folks that can put anything together and get that eclectic look but I'm not usually very good at it. I should have taken a picture of the whole living space. I will try living with them for a while. It just so happens that the part of them my husband doesn't like is the legs (and that they remind him of school). Thank you.

Smart comments here - have you so well covered! Both table and chair are very sculptural, very complementary. The niggling imbalance is brought on by the fact that the tabletop's supports (under the glass) are a bit too heavy-looking against the relative lightweight form of the chairs and delicate chair-legs. You can: 1. Disguise some of the table supports by adding a rounded, asymetrical bowl/accent on the table top, or 2. Add to the weight of the chairs by adding a rounded rug underneath and bring them together as one shape (you'll have to judge the size carefully; I suggest reshaping a folded sheet to 'preview' how this works and get the right diametre. It should 'anchor' table and chairs, but don't 'fill up' too much of your small room). A textural, shaggy or patterned rug will add interest under the glass and warm up the room too. It should contrast well with your floor (light/neutral/or colourful).

@Beth Thank you you are too kind... I am actually much more comfortable with 2-D design (graphic) than 3-D, so work with your intuition. Whatever your accent, it needs to 'sit on top' and not 'become one' with the table. Don't be afraid to obscure some of the tabletop in order to do this - some kind of wooden base/runner may or may not work ("organic matter" goes very well with glass and metal, that's why your hide works - you can't always superimpose your ethics onto basic aesthetics!) I'm a little shaky on rugs, just learning myself, but different style shouldn't matter, if there is some other element that corresponds in each of them in some way. This could be as clear as a similar or pleasing juxtaposition of colour, or a change in pattern scale (e.g. dry paint strokes on a piece of canvas drop cloth to say something about "fur"). Sometimes you can 'even out' a room by switching 2 rugs with each other. Keep your mind open, fool around, get a few pictures and review them remotely a few times to pinpoint what 'makes it' and what doesn't. That is an excellent creative process - slow, revealing, educational.

If you want to leave the chairs original you could make slip covers in a dark chocolate or thin custom-made brown seat cushions

Love the chairs and table ! Color no color don't care - very eclectic and cool!
    • Beth Beth on Dec 26, 2015
@Pearl Thank you! I love the eclectic look and admire folks that can pull it off (in fact that was what I was hoping for), but I usually do not have the gift of putting different things together and having it not look just miss-matched. Unfortunately, all of the family thinks these look miss-matched; including my husband who usually doesn't say much other than "it looks fine". I really should have taken a picture of the whole open living space and you might think differently, nothing much else is eclectic so this does stand out. I'm going to live with them for a bit and see what I can do to pull things together. The house was just re-built so we're not living there yet. We'll be going back this weekend and I'll try to take a couple more pictures.

I personally like the mix. I would consider painting the chrome legs on the chair black as there are no other chrome accents or you could introduce one on the table top. I agree with duval.26 comment about putting down a textured area carpet to add a feeling of warm to the eating area.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 31, 2015
@Faye Campbell Thank you, I wish I could get the family to agree. The chrome legs do appear to stand out but I should have taken a picture of the whole open floor plan. The sofa legs are chrome as are some other decorative items and the space is open to the kitchen with chrome fixtures. We'll live with it for a while to see if it grows on us. Turns out, the chairs are not very comfortable so we haven't been spending much time around the table.

It is perfect just as is. If you feel you must do something add a few throw pillows in the same design as the table frame visible under the glass, or add drapes in a modern geometric design fabric with beige, bronze and a small splash of red, orange or turquoise in it and use the same fabric for the throw pillows for the arm chairs, but I like it as is.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 29, 2015
@Carol Thank you! The arm chairs you see in the picture will not be staying. They are much too big for the space and the table. We were using them with a smaller round table temporarily. I love your idea of the drapes and pillows! I enjoy making drapes and pillows and used to do it a lot before moving to the woods where drapes were no longer needed. I think just to pull it together though for "show" drapes or maybe a Roman shade with matching pillows is a great idea and will bring some color into this otherwise drab room. I'd have to be careful though because I have this new swivel chair in the living area just out of range of the picture with a pretty ugly fabric..it was a good deal though and I can never pass up a good deal. It's got some yellow, dark charcoal, tan and what I thought was light gray to match the sofa is actually a light blue which I don't want to emphasize. Thanks again for the ideas.

I like what you have........as a comment I saw this on a decorating show. They used ghost chairs. I had never heard of that so I looked they are clear plastic. I think a modern look to minimize.
