We noticed this growth on our flowering plum tree recently. Does anyone know what it is?

yep that's black knot alright, we had that infect one of ours and had to cut it down and burn it so it wouldn't infect any other fruit bearing trees.

Mine's got it too!!! When I see those black lumps, I either cut off parts or all of the branch, or I slice off the dark lumps with a sharp knife and then burn the spot with the flame of a candle. But the tree is not producing fruit as it did.

Black Knot Disease. If you remove the diseased branches you will have to burn them. Do not throw in garbage as it will spread the disease. I have heard that the tree is history. You have to remove it and burn it!

Black knot is a fungal infection that often effects cherry, plum, apricot and chokecherry trees. We tried to cut it out of our tree, but it spread anyway. You can try a fungicide to control the spread of the problem, but I fear you may have to cut the tree down and burn the branches.

Black Knot infected our May Tree. We kept on cutting the infected branches but kept on coming back. Last resort, we cut down the tree.

Black knot is highly contagious and will also spread throughout a neighborhood to any trees of the same species. It appears your tree is very infected. Sorry, but for your neighbourhood's sake, it should be cut down, the branches contained (bagged or covered somehow) and disposed of (not composted). Burned would be best, but if you can't, the landfill may be your only option.

Black knot disease. It will kill the tree. You have to cut off those branches in early spring or late fall and destroy them. It spreads to all berry or fruit bearing trees.

Thank all of you. My husband is out there now removing the infected branches. We'll have a tree service take down the rest. It was a gift many years ago from the children for Father's Day, not happy to see it go. :(

Yes. We lost our tree to this smut. Call a tree doctor soon as it will continue to spread. Also, if you lose it don't plant another tree in that spot.
