Basically the only way is to lay plastic everywhere, grab a clean insect sprayer & fill with water. Lightly spray areas, let it soak in & then take a 6 or 12" drywall knife to it.

there is no " simple solution" to stripping popcorn from ceiling. I have seen many do-it-yourselfers try to undertake htis task. It's messy, time consuming, requires properly cover entire room w/plastic, wetting surface, scraping, light sanding and most likely re taping some of drywall seams. Most builders who used popcorn did so to skip a final coat of drywall prep & sanding and used it to cover many flaws & poor workmanship. I have seen several homes that did not sand or clean ceiling properly and final paint looks horrendous. It's a job that should be left to professional painting or wallcovering contractors
