What to use for weatherstripping garage doors?

My garage doors are quite drafty and there is a 1/4" gap in some places. I have looked at a couple of types of weatherstripping but is there something that is better than what I am seeing at HD and Lowes?

If you are running heat and air conditioning in the garage, it sounds like it might be worth considering new doors that fit more tightly. A new insulated metal door might cut energy bills. These doors have insulation between sheets of metal, as well as a thermal break, and are rated up to R-18 in some cases. You may even qualify for a tax credit for installing such a door. The federal tax credits may have expired, but there may be local tax credits. Call an energy audit company or your utility for information.

Changing the doors is definately in the long term plan as well as inslulating the garage but neither will be this year. I do spend time working out there but am not heating it yet either. Right now I want to eliminate the wind blowing in around the doors but want to put up something that really works.

  • You can purchase garage door frame kits that have gaskets that simply fasten to the outside door frame. The rubber seals are soft and allow for the door to open and close. But keep the drafts out.. The bottom of the door can be sealed using a screw on or glue on rubber seal. They too come in all sorts of sizes and styles that can be purchased locally. The materials should be available at local lumber yards, The big box stores sell them also, but the gasket seals typically are not quite as large as you can get so the door does not bind. Simply measure width and height of opening and let them know at the lumber store and they can get them for you. Check out J C Van Dorn Lumber or 84 Lumber. They should be able to assist you with this issue.

Thanks very much. I'll find a lumber yard and see what they have to offer.

I didn't realize that Van Doren is right around the corner from me. What a nice discovery. Thanks again.
